To build a successful career, you need to work in a field you love. If you love what you do you’ll make becoming successful a priority.

As a career women, I’ve realised it’s important to always work toward advancing ourselves. You should be continually informing yourself about your profession. Doing your research, reading and learning from others are the best ways to master your craft.

While ambitious, climbing the career ladder can be challenging. It takes time and effort. Yet, we only have so many hours in a day, so here are 10 career tips to help you make it to the top!

1. Networking

Networking can be intimidating, especially if you have little to no career knowledge or experience. However, the more you attend networking events and connect online, the more you’ll improve. It won’t be long before you’re networking like a pro.

2. Making decisions

While people may be there to help you, only you can make decisions for your future. Be firm with what you believe in and what’s best for you. Don’t let others determine your career choice or goals.

3. Reputation

Always avoid burning your bridges. Be sure to nurture relationships with your past, present and future colleagues. You never know who could be giving you your next opportunity.

4. Confidence

Having confidence is easier said than done. However, having confidence not only makes you feel better, it also gives others confidence in you. As they say, “fake it ‘til you make it”!

5. Personal life

While it’s important to love where you work you also need to love your life. Be sure to surround yourself with positive people who are going to love and support you no matter what!

6. Look after yourself

While having a successful career is important, remember to be kind to yourself. Little things like eating well, keeping fit and taking the time to do the things you love is important.

7. Budget

No one wants to work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for nothing. Being money smart is an important skill to acquire in order to become successful. If you can’t afford to hire an accountant to help manage your money, draw up a budget on Excel to track profit vs. expenses.

8. Online profiles

Let’s get real; our online profiles are just as important as our resume these days. It’s time to hide those party photos on Facebook and never look back! Never underestimate the power of a good professional page. Having a good website or LinkedIn profile is essential.

9. Be grateful

If someone has gone out of their way to help you grow, thank them. Being appreciative will leave a lasting positive impression. Whether you’re riding a career high or wallowing in the dumps just remember, ‘this too shall pass’. Everything is temporary, be grateful for what you have in life.

10. Affirmations

Believing in you is an important aspect of building a successful career. Every morning believe that you’re day is going to be successful. At the end of every day think of 3 things you’re thankful for. This will help put your life into perspective because gratitude will generate success.
