What is your name?
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a young lawyer living in Canberra with my partner and two little Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and a passion for home styling, photography and blogging in my free time.
What is the name of your blog?
www.leerachel.com and Instagram @leerachel
How did you get into blogging?
Instagram and my blog started out as a creative outlet for me from the 9-5 work grind and a way of connecting with others with similar passions. I love photography and home styling and started sharing snapshots of my home and my favourite home décor products on Instagram. When things started to take off and I realised people had an interest in my home styling, blogging just seemed like a natural extension of this. It’s a great way to share more detailed tips and inspiration and create connections.
Tell us a bit more about what your social media/ blogs include
I love sharing photos and ideas on my blog and Instagram to inspire and motivate people to create beautiful spaces. Just because you are renting or on a tight budget doesn’t mean that turning your home into a beautiful space shouldn’t be possible. I am a huge fan of promoting budget-friendly buys and shopping small to support local Australian businesses and I represent a handful of wonderful little handmade businesses creating beautiful and affordable products for your home.
Who is your inspiration?
There is a huge online community when it comes to everyday home styling and interiors and so many creative people out there that have inspired me. The DIY Decorator (https://thediydecorator.net/ @thediydecorator) in particular has always been a huge inspiration to me. She has an amazing home and budget-friendly style that really promotes the idea that a home doesn’t necessarily need to be “designer” or expensive to look amazing.
Favourite interior trend?
I am still a bit “scandi” obsessed! I just love the beautiful simplicity, natural tones and functional aspects of Scandinavian design that really brighten up a home and create a calming and relaxed space.
Worst interior trend ever?
There are so many interior trends that come and go and I will readily admit I have jumped on the bandwagon of most of them! One trend that I have never enjoyed though is taxidermy. I find there is something uncomfortable about using antlers, horns and animal heads, faux or otherwise, to decorate your home.
What is your best low cost decoration tip that can make a big impact on your home?
Investing in a set of decorative pillows and a throw is a quick and easy way to give your old furniture new life and really change the look of your home. Cushions in particular are very affordable and therefore low commitment meaning you can change them around readily to suit your mood and the current trends.
If a member of our audience is looking to redecorate their home - what are two pieces of decor they should invest in?
If you are looking to redecorate a home you should focus on upgrading those big pieces of décor that are the central pieces in your house. For most, this is the sofa where we spend our evenings and the dining room table where we gather and eat. Quality and neutral colours are always the best way to go to make sure these pieces will last through any fleeting design trends and will always look fashionable.
What is a colour scheme/style theme that can’t go wrong?
You can never go wrong with the simple and timeless combination of black and white that is almost guaranteed never to go out of style. You can make the contrast as bold or as subtle as you like or use the colour combo as a backdrop for pops of colour. The best part about the combo of black and white is that any accent will match!
