What is your name?

Maria Angus

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m an interiors stylist specialising in children’s interiors. This is my passion! I love interiors and creating beautiful spaces for parents and their little ones. I’m also a mama to two, Max (5) and Lola (1) who keep me on my toes!

What is the name of your blog?

My Mini Abode (www.myminiabode.com)

How did you get into blogging?

I have a background in marketing and communications so writing has always come to me naturally. I love having a creative outlet where I can ‘talk’ to like-minded people and share my love of interiors and kids styles.

Tell us a bit more about what your social media/ blogs include

My Mini Abode showcases my interior styling, and the blog component is where I get to chat about kids interiors, interior trends and other fun stuff like what I’m crushing on (blush!) and practical tips like what rug to choose for your kids room (the bigger the better!). I love to travel and when I do I like to hunt down the best homeware stores to then share on my blog.

What was the inspiration behind My Mini Abode?

I have always been passionate about design and interiors (having studied Interior Design at the University of South Australia). I found the inspiration for My Mini Abode after having my son and designing his bedroom. Feeling inspired and buoyed by feedback from family and friends, I had my lightbulb moment. And that's how My Mini Abode was born!

What is your top tip for organising kids’ rooms and preventing them from getting messy?

Storage, storage, storage! Hide the ugly, plastic toys in storage boxes, baskets and drawers and display a few treasured items on practical, good looking shelving. These days there are so many great storage options that it’s pretty easy to keep a kids room tidy, yet fun and stylish. My other tip would be to have a dedicated playroom with all of the above!

What is your favourite interior trend?

When it comes to kids’ rooms you can’t go wrong with items that have personal meaning like handmade artwork or a treasured soft toy that inject personality and interest into a space. Something of meaning that transcends any trend.

What in your opinion is the worst interior trend ever?

It’s so easy to get caught up in trends and lose sight of what you really love or what suits you and your family’s lifestyle. If you love something, you will make it work. Perhaps reconsider the ‘Thomas The Tank Engine’ car bed though?!

What colours/styles/patterns should we look out for across fashion and design this summer?

Blush is still BIG right now and is showing no signs of waning (phew!). Fashion, interiors, design – it’s all about blush and all of us can’t get enough. When it comes to kids interiors, grey is bang on trend, and while monochrome and Scandi are still popular styles, colour is making a serious comeback.

For our readers, what is a colour scheme or style that can never go wrong?

You can’t go wrong with using white or grey as a blank canvas for a kids’ room then using pops of colour and plenty of texture in your bedding, accessories and decor to create a fun, practical and stylish space. And when you feel like a change, updating accessories like bed linen, cushions and artwork is a relatively affordable way of updating a room and creating a whole new look.
