Samsung was founded by Byung-Chull in 1938. He started the company as a trade export company in Korea, selling fish, vegetables and fruit to China. With time Byung-Chull expanded the company into selling textiles and the company became the largest woollen mill in Korea. The company then expanded to the insurance, securities and retail business. In 1969, Samsung electronics was established with the creation of several electronic focused divisions. With founder and chairman, Byung-Chull Lee passing away in 1987, Kun-Hee Lee took over as chairman and expanded globally building factories in the US, Britain, Germany, Thailand, Mexico, China and Spain. In 1997, with the bad economy in Korea, Samsung sold most of the business to relieve their debt. However due to the demand in the electronic industry the company continued to grow. In 1993, Samsung managed to develop the 'lightest' mobile phone at that time. They continued to develop smartphones and a phone combined mp3 player around the end of the 20th century.
