Lower priced filters on the market are a blend of coconut carbon and coal-based carbon. The problem with coal-based carbon is that it has a shorter life and often results in a less palatable flavor. Ultrafiltration (UF) is a separation process using membranes with pore sizes in the range of 0.1 to 0.01 micron, a low-pressure membrane process for water treatment that is designed to remove turbidity causing particles including those comprised of suspended solids, bacteria, colloidal matter, and proteins. Typically, UF membranes will remove high molecular-weight substances, colloidal materials, and organic and inorganic polymeric molecules. Because only high-molecular weight species are removed, low applied pressures are therefore sufficient to achieve high flow rates from an Ultrafiltration membrane. UF membranes have a service life of three to five years or longer, which is comparable to reverse osmosis membranes. SHIELD Ultrafiltration modules are made from high strength, chemical resistance hollow fiber membranes that was 0.03 μm nominal pore diameter for removal of bacteria, viruses, and particulates including colloids. The 0.03μm nominal pore size combines high filtration performance and high flow. The smaller pore size provides stable long term filtration performance compared to microfiltation.
