What should I look for in a good task chair?
A lot of ergonomists have varied opinions on what how the ultimate task chair looks and functions, but there are a few rules that need to be adhered to as baselines.
Adjustability: As a minimum, the seat height needs to be adjustable, and the backrest needs to offer support in multiple locations. Additional adjustability will come in the ability to adjust/set the seat angle, adjust/set the backrest height and angle, use a seat slide to adjust the seat depth…..the list goes on and on.
Things to consider:
Armrests: if you go with armrests, make sure you get height adjustable as a minimum.
Lumbar support: some chairs will have additional lumbar support under the mesh or fabric. This is an optional extra, personal preference.
Moulded seat foam vs cut seat foam. Don’t skimp here – moulded seat foam is generally a much more comfortable experience
Backrest width: some ergonomists recommend a narrow backrest so the user can extend their arms backwards directly adjacent to their torso without impacting the backrest.
Chair Quality: mostly this isn’t an issue in the market today, but watch out for either of these labels that mean the chair has been through some third party quality testing: AFRDI (an Australian testing service) BIFMA (an international standard that any properly equipped facility can test against)
