iPhone Buying Guide For 2023

iPhone buying guide

Buying a phone can be an intimidating task. When it comes to Apple iPhones, there are so many in the market to choose from that the process can be a bit confusing. Apple usually introduces an update to their phones annually, coming up with high-end models and reducing the price of the previous ones making them more affordable for users.

If you haven’t kept up with the yearly upgrades, then it can be hard to make a distinction between the various models of iPhones. This article will give you the main aspects you need to know about the various iPhones available in the market to make your purchasing process easier.

What iPhone is the Best?

If you’re wondering what iPhone should you buy in the year 2023, we would suggest going for the most recent iPhone. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is the top of the line and offers amazing features and looks, exactly what you would expect of the latest iPhone model. If you’re looking for something on the more affordable side, you could always go for the iPhone 13 Pro Max consisting of practically the same features as the latest one except for the processor. You could also opt for the iPhone 14 Plus, as a more affordable option.

Is it Worth Buying iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max?

iPhone 14 Pro Max

Storage: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB

Battery Life: Up to 29 hours (with video playback)

Colours: Deep Purple, Gold, Silver, Space Black

If you’re searching for the best iPhone in the market without being too worried about the price, the iPhone 14 Pro Max should be your top choice. Very similar in build to the iPhone 13 Pro Max, this model has upped the ante with the A16 Bionic Chip. It is said to be the fastest chip in any smartphone out there providing a 40% faster CPU. This small change affects the performance of the phone especially, the display, camera and overall power efficiency.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max also comes with a new and improved camera. The camera features are one of the main reasons why a lot of people choose Apple iPhones, so a camera update is a given. This model comes with a whopping 48MP main camera with 2x optical zoom, along with a 12 MP ultrawide and telephoto camera. This is definitely a step up from iPhone 13 Pro Max’s all three 12MP camera lenses.

iPhone 14 Pro

Storage: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB

Battery Life: Up to 23 hours (with video playback)

Colours: Deep Purple, Gold, Silver, Space Black

There isn’t much difference between iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max when it comes to features. We would suggest going for this model if you want all the features of the iPhone 14 Pro Max at a lower price. Additionally, this model has a smaller display screen, with a 6.1” OLED display instead of Pro Max’s 6.7” display screen.

You will also be sacrificing a little on the battery life with iPhone 14 Pro. But you will still gain all the advantages of the A16 Bionic chipset. It also has the Dynamic Island display feature like the iPhone 14 Pro Max model. The Dynamic Island display is a small pop-up bubble that appears at the top of the screen notifying you about calls, messages, events and more.

Should You Buy an iPhone 13 or iPhone 14?

If you’re wondering which iPhone would be a better fit for you, we have put together the features of the top iPhone 13 models and the more affordable iPhone 14 models. We chose to group these models together because as far as pricing is concerned they would roughly fall under the same category.

iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max

Storage: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB

Battery Life: Up to 22 Hours for iPhone 13 Pro

Up to 28 hours for iPhone 13 Pro Max

Colours: Graphite, Gold, Sierra Blue, Silver

These models are meant for people who want most of the features of iPhone 14 Pro models but pay a little less.

  • The Pro Max model has a 6.7” OLED screen, the same as iPhone 14 Pro Max.
  • The battery life of both models and the screen graphics are almost as good as iPhone 14 Pro models. So, you can rest assured streaming videos and gaming will be an excellent experience.
  • Both models have a triple-camera system that includes a Telephoto lens, wide-angle and ultra-wide lens. The three lenses result in excellent landscape and portrait shots.
  • Night mode works better with the three cameras and the LiDAR scanner that improves autofocus even in low lighting making the images look sharper.

The biggest difference between these two models and the latest iPhone 14 Pro models is the processor. With the introduction of the A16 Bionic chip, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models have an upper hand with graphics, speed and overall performance. However, if you are not too fussed about minor camera changes or some additional features, then the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max is perfect for you.

iPhone 14 Plus

Storage: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB

Battery Life: Up to 26 hours

Colours: Blue, Purple, Midnight, Starlight, Yellow, Product (Red)

A step from the iPhone 14 but a small step down from the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, you should go for the iPhone 14 Plus if you want to pay less for a big phone. The display screen is the same size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max however, it lacks in certain areas.

The camera is the pride and joy of iPhones and while the camera of this model is in no way bad, you will feel the lack of the telephoto lens if you like taking a lot of photos with your phone. You still get a 12MP main camera and ultrawide lens along with Photonic Engine that offers attention to detail for every photo you take. When it comes to overall features, this one is almost at par with the iPhone 14 Pro models. So, if you’re looking for some good features at a lower price point, this one might be the perfect model for you.

iPhone 14

Storage: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB

Battery Life: Up to 20 hours

Colours: Blue, Purple, Midnight, Starlight, Yellow, Product (Red)

There has been a lot of comparison between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 13 because of their similarities. Both models look almost the same and have an excellent dual-camera system. The iPhone 14 does have a slight upper hand with the A15 Bionic chip having an extra GPU core that puts it in the same league as the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Additionally, this model has an Action Mode feature that allows you to take smooth videos.

Like the iPhone 14 Pro models, this one also has a crash detection mode. Crash Detection mode detects if you’re caught in a severe car crash and contact emergency services and your emergency contacts for you.

iPhone 13

Storage: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB

Battery Life: Up to 19 hours

Colours: Midnight, Pink, Blue, Starlight, Product (RED)

If you’re considering buying an iPhone with all the features of the iPhone 14 but at a lower price, this model is your best bet. The iPhone 13 contains features such as sensor-shift stabilization and cinematic mode on the camera. In fact, the cinematic mode is one of the most fascinating features of this model since it combines the portrait mode with video, blurring everything around your subject.

Since Apple lowers the cost of their older models once the newer ones are released, it is always good to keep track of the features of each model. This model is perfect for anyone who wants a good smartphone with excellent features but wants a lower price point than the latest models.

iPhone 13 Mini

Storage: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB

Battery Life: Up to 17 hours

Colours: Midnight, Pink, Blue, Starlight, Green, Product (RED)

If you like using iPhones for their new features but also prefer a more compact build, this is the one to go for. The Apple iPhone 13 mini offers you the same features as the iPhone 13. The model is physically much smaller and has a 5.4-inch OLED screen with Face ID as well. Unlike the iPhone 13 Pro model, iPhone 13 mini does not have the third Telephoto lens same as the iPhone 13.

However, the cameras for both iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini are said to provide you with excellent quality photos. The only thing that you would be compromising on is the battery life. Since the phone is small it doesn’t allow a long battery life as it cannot accommodate a larger battery. So, if you plan on using your phone for social media and streaming all day, then you will need a portable charger.

Let’s Take It Down a Notch

iPhone buying guide

While there are some great choices mentioned above, you might be looking for something a little more in your budget. The difference in prices is not significant but even a little reduction helps. The iPhone 12, its mini version and the iPhone SE (2022) are great mid-range options.

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini

Storage: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB

               64GB, 128GB, 256GB

Battery Life: Up to 15 hours for iPhone 12 mini

Up to 17 hours for iPhone 12

Colours: Blue, Green, Black, White, Product (RED)

Take a step down from the iPhone 13 models with the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. These models are just a year older than the latest iPhone 13 models and are offered at lower prices.

Both these models are essentially the same. The mini version is significantly smaller than the other models with a 5.4-inch display screen. Both models have an aluminium frame, and a glass body and look almost the same design-wise. Along with a dual rear camera, both phones offer night mode on the front camera as well.

Compared to the iPhone 13 models, iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini have an A14 chip. The A14 chip is great but the CPU and GPU performance is a step down from the A15 chip. The choice is yours; if you are looking for a newer iPhone but don’t want to pay extra for any of the iPhone 13 models, then the iPhone 12 would be perfect. However, if you want a compact phone that has all the features you can get in the bigger version, we would recommend going for iPhone 13 mini instead. It’s just a couple more bucks than the iPhone 12 mini and has all iPhone 13’s features.

iPhone SE (2022)

Storage: 64GB, 128GB, 256GB

Battery Life: Up to 15 hours

Colours: Black, White, Product (RED)

It may be the latest iPhone model but many of the features and design of the phone are similar to the older iPhone models. iPhone SE (2022) is an upgrade to iPhone SE (2020) version. It looks pretty much the same as an iPhone 8 but carries a lot more features. This also means that this is the only phone in the latest iPhone category that does not offer Face ID but offers Touch ID instead. The display area of the screen is smaller than the models mentioned above.

Apart from that, this model is as powerful as an iPhone 13 as it carries an A15 Bionic chip too. Along with this, it has a single 12-megapixel rear camera and offers portrait mode and smart HDR 4 for photos. It may not offer all the features you want from the iPhone 13 model but it comes pretty close!

Buy What’s Best For You

iPhone buying guide

Each of these models of iPhones is unique in its own way and the fact that they are all available in fun colours makes them even more alluring. So, go for the one that you think would sit well with how you use your phone. Each of them comes with different storage capacity options as well.

Keep your budget in mind when you’re looking to buy a new iPhone. Remember that all the latest iPhones don’t come with an adapter for charging, so you will be spending more on an adapter and a phone case.
