At the end of last year, I cut my hair from halfway down my back into an asymmetrical bob, which was the shortest I had ever had my hair cut since I was a kid and a massive change. A lot of people think that just because hair is short, there isn’t a whole lot you can do with it.
Over the course of 2015, I’ve had a lot of fun trying out new hairstyles and ways to manage a hair length I definitely wasn’t used to.
Messy waves/loose curls
Without a doubt, this is one of my favourite ways to style short/medium hair. I just love how effortless it can look, and that I don’t have to worry about any of my hair looking out of place. It may seem like you’ve put in a lot of work, but it’s definitely a look you can achieve with minimal effort. When adding waves or curls to hair, I prefer for the areas around my face to curl away from the face. I find that this just frames the face in a much nicer way than if curls were coming towards the face. Waves or curls can be made with a curling iron or hair straightener. When using curling wands, remember that the thicker the barrel, the looser your curls will be. Of course, there are also a tonne of heatless ways to achieve messy waves or loose curls, and if they work for you – even better!
Here’s a little cheat tip for you – when trying to curl short hair (above shoulder length), you don’t necessarily need to curl every bit of hair. Hair at the bottom of the back of your head would be difficult to curl but the curls above it will hide it anyway!
Sure, it’s a little tough trying to braid hair when it’s short, but when you manage to do it; the end result can look really great! There are tonnes of different ways you can style short or medium hair with a dainty braid. You could create a braided headband, or create a nice braided up-do. Also, a great thing about having short hair is that braided crowns are so much easier to do since there isn’t as much hair to pin up! Braided looks are awesome for when you want to put a little bit of ‘oomph!’ into your hairstyle for the day.
Of course, the classic straight look can’t be left out! It’s sleek and goes well with pretty much every outfit. It frames the face in a really nice way, and since your hair is short, it doesn’t look overpowering at all. If you feel like a straight hairstyle is a little too simple for you, then you could totally add in a few hair accessories such as hair clips if you’d like. It definitely also helps if your hair is naturally straight, but either way - don’t forget that when using a straightener, or any heated tool on your hair for that matter, to use heat protectant!
