Isn’t it funny how easily a child can conquer a climbing frame and yet you can’t seem to stand up to your boss. What happens as we grow older? Where does our confidence go? The good news is you can get it back. Three confidence coaches share their methods for building up this important life skill.
Amplify your voice
Exuding confidence has a lot to do with how you speak. Joshua Uebergang from Tower of Power says perfecting your speech is going to make a huge difference in your overall presentation.
Refine Your Speech
“How you speak is an oft-neglected part of self-presentation, but an important one. For instance, speaking with few “ums” and “uhs” presents you as more competent than people who say them constantly. Studies have also shown that speaking quickly makes you more confident in the eyes of others, and even more persuasive at certain times. The speed and fluidity of your speech has tremendous potential to affect your confidence and how others remember you.”
Volume and Clarity
“Do you mumble when you speak? Are you lazy about how you phrase things? If so, your confidence is a casualty of your carelessness. A strong voice with good diction and word choice shows others that you take care when expressing yourself. When you feel that you have said what you want in the way you want to, you’re confident that you can always communicate your needs and grievances with clarity, strength, and precision. Every time you speak, I want you to speak 20% louder than you feel comfortable and move your mouth more than usual to boost articulation.”
Treat it like any other skill
Confidence is a lot like riding a bike - it’s easy enough to learn and practice makes perfect. As Katie Nicole from More Confidence shares anyone can learn to be more confident.
“Confidence can be learnt, it's not something that is reserved for a special few, instead it is a skill set.
1. First of all, you need certainty, you need to know how to create it even when there is no external certainty.
2. In order to have that certainty you need to have a level of trust in yourself. Reference points are required to build that trust.
3. Failure. You need to know how to use failure as fuel.
4. Your tribe is essential to your confidence. Learn how others can hinder your self-confidence efforts.
5. Gratitude. Your ability to accept who you are begins with your ability to see good in not so good situations.”

Build it from within
We know you’ve heard this all before but the reason it hasn’t worked for you is you aren’t truly listening. True confidence comes from within yourself. Lauren Clemett from the Ultimate Business Propellor wants you to stop worrying about what others think and start finding your self-worth.
“So often we worry about what others think of us, where in reality, the only person you need to convince is good enough, is yourself.
The human brain is not particularly good at 'being happy', it is there to keep us safe, to highlight any danger and to prevent us from making really bad decisions.
But unfortunately, our ancient brains can undermine self-confidence and self-belief as it tries to protect us.
The biggest tip to overcome your own brain's fear centre is to concentrate on what you do with ease that others find difficult. That's why it's called expert-ease, and it's a major focus you can choose when you worry about being good enough.
You may think that everyone knows how to quickly change a tyre, get the best mortgage rate, lodge a BAS statement on time or wash a dog without it biting you, but it's not true. What you do with ease is what sets you apart and makes you special.
All you have to do is understand your value to believe in your worth.”
The thing about self-confidence is that you’ve had the skills for it all along, they just got a little lost. By trying out these techniques you can make the world your playground and feel as confident as you were when you were young.
