From weddings to formals, Spring racing and every ball in between; special events take a lot of effort. When it comes to beauty prep you’ll be better off getting a head start than fitting it all in last minute. If you’ve got a big event in your calendar then here’s the step-by-step beauty guide to get you primped, prepped and pretty just in time.
2 WEEKS BEFORE
Book your appointments
From waxing to spray tan and the day-of hairdo; you don’t want to be scrambling at the last minute begging a receptionist to fit you in. Mark the date in your calendar and at least two weeks in advance book all those necessary appointments. If it’s a really special event (like your wedding) then you may want to book a trial appointment as well to test out the finished hair and makeup look.
Deep clean your pores
The next few weeks will be chock full of skin and beauty prep. As you get closer to the event you’ll need to treat your skin gently to avoid breakouts and irritation. A few weeks in advance is the perfect time to start off with a deep cleanse. Try a Charcoal Peel-Off Face Mask by Skin Republic that removes blackheads and purifies pores.
1 WEEK BEFORE
Sleep like a princess
They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing. Getting plenty of rest in the lead up to your event is the best way to ensure a plump, youthful complexion. As we enter deep sleep our body produces more growth hormones which help repair skin and boost collagen. So how can you reach the coveted beauty sleep?
First, by allowing yourself time to get to sleep and stay asleep. Spend some time winding down before bed without the tech - as bright light disrupts sleep - and aim for at least 7-8 hours of shut-eye per night to ensure you have time to complete full sleep cycles.
Second, make sure your bed is as comfortable as it can be. Deep sleep is the kind where it’s hard to wake a person, so if you have a princess and the pea level sensitivity then it’s going to be hard to reach. Take a good look at your mattress quality to see if that’s keeping you restless at night. For a fast solution look into a cushioned mattress-topper that’ll reinvigorate your worn-out bed.
Drink like a fish
The other secret to healthy, glowing skin is good old H2O. Getting your 8-glasses or more a day isn’t easy but it will be rewarding. One way to ensure you’re keeping up the fluids is to drink a bottle of water for each coffee you have in the day. Alternatively, cut out the caffeine (since it’s dehydrating) for the week and trade it with herbal teas.
Clean up your diet
Hydration isn’t the only key to a gorgeous glow. Everything you put in your body has the potential to affect your outer shell, which is why diet and exercise are so important. Cut down on alcohol, salt and sugary sweets in the lead-up to your event. If you’re running the upcoming event then stress is likely to creep in. To support your body and mind when you’re feeling stressed a diet full of whole grains, fruits and veggies is best. It’s only for a week and you’ll feel much better for it, we swear.
Prep your skin
Exfoliation is super important if you’ll be fake tanning during the week. It’ll leave a smooth canvas to avoid streaks and patches giving away your little secret - that you weren’t just on an island holiday. Even if you are leaving your skin without a sun-kissed glow, an all-over smoothness is desirable. Choose a night during the week and pamper your body head to toe. Grab an exfoliating mitt and rub away dry, flaky skin. Finish off with a moisturising bath and a layer of body butter before bed.
We really mean head to toe. Fix up your feet with a Foot Peel by Skin Republic. Featuring 15 plant extracts - from Gingko Biloba to Green Tea - this will leave your feet silky smooth in just 7 days.
Treat yourself to a facial
Feeling indulgent? Splurge on a salon facial to relax your mind and cleanse your pores. Alternatively, add an at-home facial to your pamper night in between your bath and body butter regime. Mimic the steam machines in the salon by applying a hot cloth to your face. It’ll draw out impurities and open your pores for a deep cleanse. Or add some extra hot water to your bath and let the steam rise around you.
Test your makeup
If you’ll be DIY-ing the final look on the day then you need to make sure your makeup is up to the challenge. Makeup can actually expire and when it does you’ll find it loses pigment, moves on your face and leads to an overall less than perfect look. Try out some of the products you intend to wear on a regular day and see how they stack up to the challenge of sweat, lights and touching your face throughout the day. If they fail the challenge it may be time for new products. To keep them from expiring before their time, store them away from heat, steam and excessive light - i.e. not in the bathroom. Opt for your bedroom dresser instead.
THE NIGHT BEFORE
One last skin treatment
All going well you should be looking fresh-faced, smooth-skinned and well-slept. But none of us are perfect. It’s possible you ran out of time to fit in a facial or haven’t been keeping to a strict diet. When you need to rescue a dull complexion a face mask or concentrated treatment is ideal. The Youthfoil Face Mask by Skin Republic provides intense hydration, reduces signs of aging and leaves a smooth complexion perfect for applying makeup. It’s your last-minute hero if you failed to be a clean-eating goddess in the lead up to the event. Their 24k Gold Undereye Patches can be used the night before or even morning of to minimise fine lines, hydrate and depuff your under eye area.

The safest time to paint your nails is as close to the event as possible. Avoid chips by opting for a shellac or gel manicure that can withstand almost anything. If you’ll be saving money by doing it yourself, try running your nails under cold water once they are touch dry. It helps them to set faster and harder to ensure a glossy, chip-free finish.
Last but never least, it’s time to relax. You’ve worked hard the past few weeks to look your best and deserve the night off. Hop in your PJs and kick your feet up with a night on the couch. Head to bed early so you can get one last rejuvenating sleep and enjoy your big day tomorrow!
Look great, have fun and most importantly take plenty of pics!
