Creating your home is such a personal adventure, and you want to ensure that you’re making style choices that reflect your own personal flair and creativity - but at the same time are fashionable and reflect current trends. The best way to do this? Opt for furniture with classic designs, that simply never go out of style! When it comes to shopping for your wardrobe, there are certain staple pieces that you just must have - interior design is no different! These ideas have stood the test of time, and are bound to get you on the right track towards a stylish home that you love, or upgrade your existing rooms so that you love coming back to your house everyday!
Light Up Your Life!
Good lighting will add so much more to a room than you could possibly imagine! It’s an easy interior design trick that works for any style, any time. Milray Park interviewed Tara Dennis, Founder and Chief Interior Designer at TD Creative and Milray Park Gold Designer, and she noted the lighting of a room to be the first thing she notices when she walks in a room:
“Whether it’s natural, artificial, dark or bright - it’s the first thing I take note of as it is an accurate provider of the mood of a space, and mood is a leading factor in how a space is used. I personally prefer darker, more moody spaces with slivers of natural light, so subconsciously I’m probably looking for that.”

Antiques!
Antique and vintage furnishings are always a good place to start if you are stumped for ideas, and just want to add something a little original, special and creative to your home environment. From neoclassical-styled columns to porcelain pieces, both large and small scale objects can make an impact if they are unique-looking and stand out from the rest of the furniture in your house!
Patterned Walls!
Patterned walls will always be in fashion - and there are so many styles for you to choose from, you’re bound to find something that makes you happy! You could consider this for bathrooms - especially your master bathroom, as well as in your kid’s rooms! A child’s room is the number one place where you can go crazy with designs, as it is all about brightness and cheer - and patterned walls can help you create this vibe. Make sure to choose a pattern that compliments your kid’s bed and other pieces of furniture in the room (neutral colours always work well). There are always affordable kids beds for sale, so this is one room in which you can really go to town with your decor - from purchasing children’s lounge chairs to creating and furnishing a kids outdoor play area.
Timeless Fabric Choices
Here’s a tip from The Sheet Society on how to use fabric to contribute to your timeless home design:
“Our Chambray quilt cover set is a timeless fabric and its washed tone of blue can be styled so many ways. We are seeing a huge 90’s denim revival so have teamed Chambray with our dark Indigo as a ‘double denim’ look. For this look we have paired it back with a classic trans-seasonal Nude. In Summer we would mix Chambray with White for a clean and crisp feel - much like how you would wear a white shirt with your denim shorts. As it gets cooler, we pair Chambray back with navy or Terracotta in Winter for a warmer earthy feel. It’s so versatile, and like your fave pair of jeans - it will never go out of style!”

The ‘Hygge’ Theme
Gabriella Hooper from Etsy, has provided an explanation about the ‘Hygge’ theme as a timeless home decor idea:
“Despite being very ‘on trend’ at the moment, a timeless home decor idea, is the ‘Hygge’ theme. ‘Hygge’ is a Norwegian word used to describe an atmosphere and experience of coziness, wellbeing, safety and happiness. The Happiness Institute of Denmark believes that the Danes’ social relationships make them the happiest, and that ‘Hygge’ is at the core of these relationships.
Etsy.com, the online marketplace for vintage and handmade goods, has compiled a cozy Hygge-esque Autumn/Winter lookbook. The Danish-inspired collection includes the likes of a Bay Rum Candle, Leather Bag Tags and Blush Shibori Tea Towels, that will bring you warmth and happiness throughout the cooler months.
This theme is more than just aesthetic, it’s about feeling happy and loved. We have Etsy spokespeople available who can chat more about this!”

Design Styles That Have Been Around For 50 Years Or More
If a particular style or trend has been popular for ages, and has hit the 50-year mark for example, you are probably safe in assuming it’ll continue to be popular for a good while to come. It’s also important to follow your own instincts, as even if a particular piece isn’t currently in fashion, remember that trends are ever changing and in a couple of years you might be thanking yourself for holding on to that weird-looking chandelier that you never quite new where to place. So if you feel strongly about something, get it (within reason) and trust your design instincts to create the perfect home for you!
