Feeling like it might be time for a little retouching? Maybe an entire home makeover? Changing up your backyard can mean that you have the perfect venue to host dinner parties, playdates or just to chill out in after a long day of work. So start maximizing that space and make use of the following ideas to turn your backyard into a functional, stylish space to enjoy with your family.
Make Use Of Nature - Incorporate A Tree Swing!
If you have little kids this idea is bound to be a hit. Rather than having a swing installed, why not let your architecture be inspired by the existing nature around you. Tree swings not only look awesome, but can also be sturdy and fun ways to keep your little munchkins happy. Daniel Brady from Heavenly Hammocks elaborates on implementing a nest swing into your backyard design:
“Adding a nest swing to a strong tree branch makes a backyard much more fun for for 3-15 year olds, and keeps them active. Nest swings often get daily use and if you’re hosting a party with kids attending, you can be sure that they’ll all want to give it a try. The most popular choice is a 100cm wide mat nest swing, which can sit multiple small children at once. You can see 10 or so different options here.”

Sometimes All You Need Are A Few Tweaks
It’s easy to get overwhelmed if you start thinking of redoing your entire backyard - changing the style, overall aesthetic and everything else all at once! However this definitely does not need to be the case. Even a few small tweaks here and there can create the world of difference, and make you feel as though you have a whole new space.
Mike Corson owns Vivid Scapes, servicing South Sydney and it’s surroundings for landscape design and construction projects. He recommends asking yourself these questions before you get started:
“How do you use the space now? What do you like about it that you want to keep and what are the things you feel are missing? Think about your ideal backyard in the future and what it would include.
What would make your backyard, functional, yet desirable? You want this space to work with your life. Do you need room for the kids and pets to play? Do you want to purely entertain, with low maintenance?
And of course, what is your budget? It’s no use dreaming of lush lawns, hardwood decking and a fire pit, if the budget simply won’t stretch.”
He has also provided a couple of quick tips to get you started:
“Create a vibrant space with the use of colour and textures. Pair natural stone with freshly laid grass, and utilise plant choices with green, purple or white to enhance your new hardwood deck.
And ultimately, if you’re not sure where to start, but are looking to freshen up a tired yard, a bit of hard-yakka with weed pulling and fresh mulch will liven up any space and perhaps inspire the next change you’re looking for!”
Get Your Backyard Perfect Play-date Ready
When there are a bunch of your children’s friends coming over and the mothers want to sit back and relax with a cold drink, it helps to have equipment in place to keep the young ones easily occupied.
Why go to the playground when you can bring the playground to you? Consider getting a sandpit, kids cars or perhaps a cubby house and you’ll have the kids running around, entertained for hours while soaking up some much needed vitamin D! Keep a look out for trampolines for sale, or any other fun playthings that will keep them on their feet. This way, you are prepared for impromptu playdates, without having to come up with activities at a moment’s notice. Having the right kids outdoor play equipment and toys in place takes care of that problem for you! Convenient or what?
Consider An Exterior Tile Feature
If you are just looking for that little something to make your existing design pop, or give your backyard a “wow” factor, Heide Scherer from jennoliART has an idea for you:
“We have been creating exterior tile features for many years and seen the increase of using tiles in backyard renovations over the last years - specially personalised tiles. The tiles are personalised and can be created to suit any design style to complement the area and achieve a beautiful feature wall.”
Whether you’re changing it up for a particular occasion, or simply feel like a switch of scene, these tips have got you covered. You’d be surprised how much just a few minute tweaks can make you feel like you have a whole new part of your home!
