If you thought your bathroom didn’t need to be styled; think again. It’s not the most common room to focus on your decor but a beautiful bathroom is worth the effort. It’ll take your morning routine from bothersome to pampering and give your guests a welcoming feel.
Getting the basics
The bathroom is a lot like other rooms of the house in that there are a few necessary items to make it work. Finding functional and stylish items is the key to dressing up your bathroom basics. Think fluffy white towels, luxe soap dispensers and luscious hand creams to dress up the vanity. Zoe Gilpin is a qualified interior designer and blogger from The DIY Decorator. She shared with us her favourite bathroom style tips:
“When decorating a bathroom, I strongly believe in the term less is more. To achieve this, store beauty and bath products away to give a sleek, neat look. Introduce a few key functional items such as a nice quality matching towel set and bathroom accessories (soap dish, dispenser etc) to compliment the bathrooms finishes. I also suggest adding in decorative items such as candles and plants to really finish the space and give it that extra luxe look. If you have the room, a nice addition which is currently on trend is a timber stool to sit near the bath. Perfect for placing a candle and glass of wine on while relaxing in the bath.”

Designing with the essentials
The bathroom mirror is both an essential item and a chance to get funky with your decor. A good mirror is a bit like a great sofa; it’s the main feature piece and something no bathroom should be without. Round or square mirrors are the most practical for a good view and fitting on any wall space. The frame is an opportunity to add interest in the design with styles like opulent gold, striking black or natural woods popular. Infinity edging is a newer design that gives a sleek, modern look and some even have backlighting to offer just the right amount of glow as a night light too. Following the trends
Style phases turn around faster than you can say elegant bathroom decor. Who can afford to renovate everytime a new style pops up on the scene? It’s better to invest in affordable trends and keep the bulk of your decor the same. Tiffany Jade Benn is an Australian designer from Hart Home Decor and she gave us one affordable trend she’s loving right now:
“The latest thing I am loving that is cropping up everywhere is plants in the bathroom! This feels like a fabulous throw back to the 1970s. Plus there is a great reason to have plants in this room as they can apparently help reduce humidity. They look fabulous, stylish and give a gorgeous jungalow vibe. Why not add a couple of tropical prints to the walls of your bathroom too to complete the jungle takeover.
Having a soy candle or two in the bathroom can also completely transform it. Choose a scent that will help relax you. I love jasmine, lavender and lemongrass for this. Herbs such as sage and basil give a gorgeous freshness. If you’re heading for a more tropical vibe why not go for Coconut & Lime or something with a fruity base.”

Things to leave out of the bathroom
It’s common to keep prescription meds, perfumes and makeup brushes in your bathroom since this is where you use them most. But the varying temperatures of the room make it one of the worst places to house these items. Perfumes, makeup and medications can break down in excess heat while the steam from your shower can support bacteria growth on your brushes. Keep them safely tucked away in a bathroom cabinet or ideally, out of the bathroom altogether. Some extra bedroom storage is all it takes to keep your important items safe from harm. Timeless glamour with artworks
A painting isn’t going to last well in a humid bathroom but that doesn’t mean art is off the table entirely. Sharron Tancred is an artist and decorator from Tailored Artworks who creates custom designs for any room of your home. Here’s how she jazzes up the bathroom:
“Bathrooms can be glamorous but what creates glamour? Expensive materials, shining metallics, rich jewel colours, luxuriant textures, thick towels and unifying floral arrangements. Art also adds glamour, themes your bathroom and individualises it with inimitable details.
Tailored Artworks’ new Art Into Mosaic’s brilliantly coloured, high-gloss tiles add texture, colour and glamour to your indoor or outdoor bathroom—never fading, cracking or wearing.
This is real mosaic, not printed and is uniquely tailored to your taste and space. Artist and Decorator Sharron Tancred digitally applies artwork relevant to you and suggests feature wall and linen colours, perfect for any renovation or new build. Gorgeous mosaic tiles arrive boxed and numbered, ready for easy DIY or professional installation by your preferred tiler. For bathrooms, simply apply an anti-slip treatment for a safe and wonderfully soft feel underfoot.”
