how to decorate your backyard

Home is the one place where you can let go of your daily stresses and completely relax. Whether you live alone, with a partner or with your family, your home is a place where you are you. The best part about having your own home is having the freedom to decorate any way you want. You can let your creativity run wild and make something so beautiful that it gives you peace of mind every time you look at it. Doing up the interiors of the house is important and you can refer to many interior design ideas online or in a magazine. However, we often tend to forget the exteriors of the house.

While maintaining a backyard garden is part of decorating the area there is so much more you can do. If you’re asking yourself how can you decorate your backyard, then keep on reading. We have gathered ideas on how to decorate a small or a big backyard.

Deck and Patio Ideas

If you have a deck or a patio in your backyard, then all you need to do is decorate them according to what is already there or with something completely different. Wooden decks can be decorated in various ways and there is a lot you can do with concrete decks or patios as well.

Funk it up with Tiles

Concrete decks can be transformed into a fun space using tiles. Look for some fun designs that you know would suit your style and would be perfect to cover the entire floor. Mosaic tiles, geometric designs, limestone or granite tiles, there are so many options out there. However, you have to be sure of what you choose because once you’ve got it installed, you can’t change it easily.

While going for more neutral coloured tiles would make it easier for you to decorate, we recommend going for something fun and bright. Let the tiles be the highlight of your deck and the furniture be part of the background.

Play Around with Colours

Decorating a space is easier if you have a colour palette you want to stick to. Monochrome is an excellent idea for styling the patio or deck. Black and white is a classic choice that you can go for. However, it doesn’t necessarily have to be the two colours, you can always have some natural woody browns in there because some of your furniture will be in that colour. There are no set rules here, just go with the colours you feel sit well with the area.

Whether you have a wooden or concrete deck, a colourful coffee table can really change how you decorate the area. You can incorporate the monochrome colour scheme here too, just start with a solid coloured coffee table. It could be white, blue, green, brown or any colour that you fancy.

rugs

The same colour philosophy can be used with rugs. Doesn’t matter what type of surface you have, a colourful rug is a perfect cover. Moreover, they also allow you the freedom to change the rest of the decor every time you change the rug.

Au Naturale

When decorating your space outdoors, appreciate everything that surrounds you. If you are blessed with a big garden where you can have your vegetable or flower beds along with a tree then use that as inspiration. Use woven furniture made from bamboo wicker and wood that can withstand moisture and exposure to varying weather conditions. The natural colours of these materials would blend well with the surroundings.

As far as fabrics are concerned, go for shades of green, brown and blues. If you want something brighter, you can opt for warm colours such as orange, rust and red. Basically, replicate the colours you see around you and add variations through different shades of the same colour.

Dreamy White

The natural colour and texture of wood and concrete are beautiful and can easily be left bare. However, with constant exposure to different weather conditions, your wooden or concrete deck can become a little dull. So, if you want to refresh the look of the area, go with the one colour that will shine from a mile- WHITE!

White woven furniture with white cushioning may seem too bright, but the contrast between the furniture and the wooden or concrete around it is perfect. However, white can easily rob the area of any warmth, so add to the warmth with some warm yellow lighting. Lamps, pendant lights and even string lights would be perfect for your backyard. The overall feel of the area will end up looking like a fairytale.

Invest in a Small Outdoor Bar

outdoor bar

There is no need for a big bar setup outdoors. If you don’t have enough space for a whole bar outside, then get a bar cart. Bar carts are easy to move around and have enough space to store most things you’ll need to prepare and serve drinks for an outdoor party. If you have enough space outdoors, then we would recommend an outdoor bar set that includes a table and bar stools. These tables usually have storage space to keep your alcohol intact.

Another way of incorporating a bar in your outdoor space is by making a make-shift bar. Install small wall-mounted shelves or a small wall cabinet that can store some alcohol and mixing essentials. Put this make-shift bar somewhere near a seating area, so you can easily lounge around and mix a few drinks right there and then.

No Deck No Problem

Having a deck or patio in your backyard is great but if you don’t there are other ways you can incorporate furniture and decorative pieces in your backyard. Metal, wood or wicker furniture will look great outdoors. However, don’t go for big furniture pieces. Place a two or four-seat outdoor dining set under a tree or on side of the garden. Here are some of the other things you can do with your garden.

String Lights and Ground Lights

festoon and ground lights

It is a known fact that lights can easily change the look of any space. So, if you want to achieve that dreamy look for your backyard, opt for festoon lights. These are string lights that are bigger than fairy lights. You can extend these string lights all over your backyard and even use them to outline certain areas such as the fence or a tree.

Ground lights should be a must for any garden. Go for the small ones that are perfect to light the way or illuminate certain areas of the garden. If you like your backyard to be lit up without wasting too much energy, we recommend going for solar-powered ground lights. Moreover, these are a great way to keep your garden lit up even when you’re not using the backyard.

Colourful Fences and Potted Plants

You don’t need a deck or furniture to make your garden colourful. Flowers are an excellent way to add some colour to the backyard, but if that is not enough then paint your fences. Paint your picket fences in different colours or one colour of your choice. On the other hand, you can install a long metal fence and attach a few colourful potted plants to it.

Potted plants, in fact, can add a lot of personality to a garden. Yes, there might be greenery all around you but you can add to it by putting up potted plants on your fence and hanging some on a tree branch.

How to decorate a small backyard?

vertical garden

Well, you can save some space in your backyard by carrying out vertical gardening. If you like the idea of growing your vegetable or having a flower garden, you can do so in a small space. Vertical gardens are a trendy way to do gardening because it is practical and looks great. You can also put up some raised garden beds on side of the backyard.

Additionally, for a small garden, we would recommend investing in a dining set if you like to dine outdoors with your partner. This is because there might just be enough space for two-seat dining set in your backyard without making it look overcrowded. However, if dining in your backyard is not something you do regularly, then would suggest getting a set of lounge chairs or a hammock chair.

 Outdoor Furniture Needs

For small outdoor spaces and for big ones, you need to find the right kind of furniture. While your backyard would look great with just a few vegetable or flower beds along with some lights, you will need some furniture to make it cozier. Lounge sets, dining tables and chairs, outdoor bars and outdoor kitchens, there is so much you can do for your backyard. If you’re a barbeque enthusiast, get yourself an excellent bbq grill along with an outdoor kitchen. These kitchens come with enough space to do all your chopping and slicing, an attached fridge and storage.

If you enjoy just lazing around in your backyard with your family, friends or pet, opt for a fire pit or outdoor heater to continue your lazy tradition during the winter months. In addition to that, if you have kids your backyard is perfect for creating a personal playing space for them. Cubby houses, tree houses, trampolines and any other outdoor activity can be set up in a small area within the backyard.

It’s all about the amount of space you have and what you want to do with that space. Some people might be comfortable with just two chairs and some lights and some might want a whole dining experience outdoors. You can do either with the right furniture and decoration.
