Interior Design Trend Forecast: Spring

It's almost the end of 2017 (I know!) and that means a whole new season of interior trends. Here's what we're predicting will be the next big thing.

As the new season rolls around, there are new trends. While we haven’t seen the end of millennial pink (and unfortunately, we won’t be seeing the end of it any time soon), there are some new trends that will be working their way out of your Pinterest board and into your home.

Monochrome Soft Furnishings
Sophie Mercer from Simply Cushions shares her interior trend forecast. “While popular colours come and go each season, interior designers are increasingly looking to neutral colours to balance out their spaces. Rapidly on the rise are pieces in black and white tones. Why? Because these provide an easy method of adding to a room without creating tension between other existing colours. For example, there are some amazing black and white cushion designs around at the moment and these are perfect for spaces that have existing colour palettes or just are generally ‘busy’ looking. They effortlessly fit alongside existing colour patterns and also bring a sense of chic, modern styling.” Find out more about Simply Cushions by following them on Facebook and Instagram.

Black (Technically An Indigo But Whatcha Gonna Do)
We only have four months left of the year, so we’re already planning the trends for 2018, even though we haven’t even let go of half the trends from 2016. The colour of the year for 2018, according to PPG Paints will be Black Flame. That’s right, black. It’s time to say bye to Rose Quartz, Serenity Blue and even Greenery because darkness is taking over. Now, this isn’t Vantablack (the blackest black you can get), it’s more of an indigo, so it won’t look as extreme, and it does look quite fancy painted on your front door.

Jewel Tones
This trend has been slowly tingling its way onto the scene, and now it’s finally here. Emerald greens, sapphire, ruby and gold tones are the colours of choice, with statement pieces of furniture being all you need to look like royalty. With this trend, you can have a feature navy wall, or a ruby red couch, or even a royal coloured rug, and you’re set. There’s no need to strip the entire house so you can install some rose gold finishes, that’s a thing of the past.

Temporary Art
Scott Ko from ColourSpace Galleries, a new art subscription service, shares his interior trend forecast. “We believe an interior design trend that will be a huge hit is the idea of artwork that regularly changes. Art brings something special to an environment. Beyond a splash of colour, art tells stories. It brings culture, style, and engagement to an environment that just about everyone can appreciate. But more often than not, art is something that doesn’t change, contributing to staid and static environments. That’s why we believe that an interior environment with regularly changing artwork, all of which is sourced from local artists, is one that both creates a dynamic, rich interior environment, whilst also supporting local artists.” You can find out more about ColourSpace Galleries by following them on Facebook and Instagram.

Vintage Romance Fusion
Rebecca Kerr, the Creative Director of Longina Phillips Design offers her interior design forecast. “As customs fuse, we look to a nostalgic and vintage romance in print and pattern. A new and exotic world where we imagine 16th-century aristocrats, trading across the seven seas, shipwrecked upon a Caribbean shore. Sunbleached and worn out by the sea and sand, fabrics become distressed, while collections of local customs become entangled in the look. Traditional African basket weaving, shells and driftwood become totem like decorations upon old world florals. A soft and chalky palette lends itself to a precious floral and ethnic story.” Find out more about Longina Phillips by following them on Facebook and Instagram.

This season, think rich tones, interchangeable artwork and monochrome. It’s an exciting time for interior design, and I honestly just can’t wait for millennial pink to be out the door!
