Once you’ve retired, you go through a heap of emotions. A blessing and a curse, it can be tough trying to find something to spend your time doing. Whether you’re hoping to travel or to write a book, there are so many things to do, now that you have all the time in the world. So, you’ve retired, now what?
Pick Up A Sport
If you’ve always wanted to take up a sport, but you’ve never had time, well guess what? Now you have time! Whether it be golf, hiking or even playing bowls, picking up a sport is a great way to keep your fitness levels up, make new friends and spend some time outside.
Pick Up A New Hobby
If you’re more of the creative type, maybe sport isn’t the best option for you. Picking up a new hobby, such as gardening, painting or finally writing that book you’ve been meaning to write for the past ten years is a great way to spend the spare time you have. Gardening is a great way to spend your time, get outside and even become healthier. Gardening has been proven to lower stress, help improve mental health, not to mention the exercise you get and the delicious food you get to enjoy! Take those tools out of your gardening shed from MyDeal and get our hands dirty! Picking up a new hobby is a great way to keep your mind sharp and finding something you may not have known that you loved.
Work Part-Time or Casually
Just because you’ve retired, doesn’t mean you can’t keep working. You don’t have to work every day, but you can always pick up a shift or two at your local florist, the library or even down at a cafe. Keeping yourself on your feet and earning a bit of extra cash can be a great way to keep the ebb and flow of life going.
Go Back To School
Lorra Hudson shares her experience. “After 18 years in the print media, starting as a writer and moving to a key account manager eventually being taken into staff development and training. When retirement was forced upon many in the print media due to falling revenue, it’s a shock and a huge transition. So at 58, I wrote a bucket list, my first was to learn the flute which I am still mastering g but the second was to complete a degree my Masters of business marketing. That's ticked!! And now I have many young overseas students I attended Utas with that have become close friends that come to me for advise or help! (So in a funny way still training and developing which was my passion).”
You don’t have to work for the money, you can always volunteer for an organisation that you are passionate about, or volunteer for something that you’ve always wanted to learn more about. Whether this be for a charity, an art gallery or once again, even just the library, you can delve into a whole new world of knowledge, just by giving your time! Deanna Rose from VIEW Clubs shares. “Women are invited to join VIEW Clubs of Australia – a network of over 16,000 women across 330 clubs nationally. VIEW offers connection to community that may otherwise be lost upon retirement. VIEW members volunteer and fundraise for national children's charity The Smith Family.” Find out more about VIEW Clubs by following them on Facebook.
So you have all the time in the world, why not spend that time actually travelling the world? Hop on a plane, grab your passport and set sail. The places you’ve always wanted to see; the places you thought you’d never see again; the places you never planned on seeing; do it all.
Chase The Sun
If you’re a fan of summer, why not spend all your time chasing it? Travel from place to place, lying on the beach, soaking up the vitamin D. If you’re the opposite, and you revel in the cold, do the same thing, only chase the snow. Travel to Europe in Australia’s summer, enjoy a white Christmas.
Get A Pet
If you’re in need of some company, you should consider adopting a pet from the shelter! A pet is not only great company, but they’re also a great way to boost your immune system, decrease stress levels and keep your fitness levels up. Make them feel like a part of the family by spoiling them a little bit, giving them a super fancy pet bed from MyDeal and treating them like your baby. Hey, they are!
