Tell us a bit about yourself …..
I’m Kim Oakhill, a Mum of two cheeky little ones (Conway, 4 and Dusty Mae, 2), a dreamer, creator and founder of Helpful Love. I live in Newcastle NSW on a 2 acre property and am committed to living my best life.
I'm a dreamer, big thinker and a do-er, and run 2 other successful businesses - a successful modern celebrant business, and a modern celebrant collective. Helpful Love is my big love and priority at present.
What's interesting about me is that I'm absolutely in love with love... all my businesses are centred around love... and for the last 6 months, I have struggled through a heartbreaking marriage break up with a man who was simply unable to love me back due to mental health. He left me at a time when my start up experienced its biggest growth and successes, and I simply had to soldier on!
Helpful Love is a start up which supports people during their darkest days... during times of grief and loss. I had no choice but to stay strong and push through the darkness for my beautiful community, which has made me stronger and more determined than ever!
Helpful Love is an online community of vendors who provide practical, useful gifts during tough times. Flowers are lovely, but not really helpful. At Helpful Love, people can purchase a gift voucher that can be redeemed with a diverse range of practical service providers like mowing, cleaning, home cooked meals, remedial massage and more!
The vision came about following the death of a 3 year old girl, Maddie, and flowers were simply not helpful to the beautiful grieving family left behind... The business launched on 18 February 2016, exactly 2 years since Maddie passed away, and is currently servicing Newcastle, Hunter Valley,Central Coast, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Port Stephens, Port Macquarie and Brisbane, with vendors from all over Australia reaching out to join the movement.
What is the biggest obstacle you have faced in life & how did it impact you?
My marriage break up has hands down been the absolute biggest shake up for me. Grieving the loss of someone who is still alive has been really difficult, but I am committed to shining through adversity and using this experience to realize my fears and tackle them head on to become the best version of me that I can be.
What would you say are your greatest achievements in life thus far?
I feel so blessed to have accomplished so many wonderful things. I am currently 31 and feel so proud of:
- My beautiful, free spirited, confident, independent children;
- My thriving businesses;
- My successful corporate career (leading a high performing commercial team from my early 20s);
- Completion of my several tertiary qualifications;
- The type of life I have created for myself.
How did you work through your struggles to achieve the success you have today?
I have a bunch of helpful tools in my toolkit:
- An attitude of gratitude;
- Surrounding myself with friends and family who inspire me and demonstrate qualities I want for myself;
- Keeping things in perspective;
- Believing that there is light at the end of the tunnel;
- Tackling big stuff in small steps (as my Mum says, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time…” Not that either of us would ever do that… we love elephants!)
What is one tip you have for keeping motivated?
As Dory says in Finding Nemo, “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming!”
Who is someone that helped you on your journey from struggle to success?
I have a whole tribe of diverse, beautiful souls who have helped me (and who continue to lift me up and carry me when I’m unable to do so myself) Each of my “peeps” have different attributes, values and perspectives, so I’ll reach out to the most appropriate one depending on the support I need.
My support network contains people from all walks of life – spiritual healers, CEOs, life coaches, health professionals, stay at home Mummas… I’m truly blessed for the perspectives and insights they give me.
What qualities do you think are essential in a person in order to be successful?
Positivity and resilience are absolutely key.
Do you think there are benefits to going through hardships before achieving your goals?
Until I experienced my breakup, I probably would have said, “No.”
I always thought that I was the luckiest person in the whole wide universe for having a carefree, easy ride. Everything always went in my favour and I truly was living an incredibly blessed life. And I was incredibly successful in my endeavours.
However, I’m wholeheartedly grateful for this experience as it has exposed me to experiences where there are big things outside of my control. It has taught me that I have strength to move forward during times of adversity and to be grateful for every single experience – the easy ones, and the problematic, challenging times that require strength, courage and determination to move forward.
What are some plans and goals you have for the future?
Growing the Helpful Love movement nationally and of course, globally. I truly believe it has the potential to change the world and make a difference in people’s lives, and I want to be the one to lead that change.
The day my husband moved out, my world was a bit of a mess. I didn’t really have the headspace to maintain the same level of energy and dedication I had been putting in to Helpful Love (in addition to working my 3 day a week corporate job, and portfolio of over 100 weddings booked in for the year – especially as I was now a single Mum with a 2 year old and 4 year old!) so I had a decision to make…. Give up, or keep going…
I decided to back myself wholeheartedly and invested $20k in a rebrand and new website development for Helpful Love. Go hard or go home… I chose hard, and I knew I couldn’t do it on my own. So I outsourced it.
We are currently approximately 2-3 months away from the launch of the new website, and I am incredibly excited for the future of the Helpful Love movement!
Lastly, what is one piece of advice you have for others to overcome difficulty and achieve success?
Back yourself. You got this. Just keep going… the best is yet to come!
If you believe in yourself, and consistently stay motivated, you can achieve a crazy amount in life. We hope you are inspired by Kim’s story to do great things in life!
