What is your name?
My name is Ainsley Ryan
Tell us a bit about yourself…
I’m in my mid-twenties and live in Geelong, Australia with my partner. I grew up in a small country town and made the move to study in my dream field of architecture.
I graduated earlier this year with degrees in architecture and construction management. I'm taking a pause between study and using this opportunity to explore my love of home styling and decorating. Between job hunting and working full time retail I had been seeking a creative outlet to channel my passions and as a result www.itsamonochromelife.com was born. I have always felt an affinity towards interior design and love creating beautiful spaces to live and work in.
What is the name of your blog?
It’s a Monochrome Life
How did you get into blogging?
While my blogging ‘career’ is only just beginning, I have been toying with the idea for some time. I began the year (like many others) with a long list of goals and ambitions. Creating a website was top of the list and it is very exciting to be able to share my style with the world. I started the Instagram page around a year ago from which a blogging felt like the next step. The website aims to create a platform to showcase a collection of timeless beautiful design.
Tell us a bit more about what your social media/ blogs include.
My posts are about sharing what I love and enjoy with my audience.
The philosophy behind It’s a Monochrome Life is to highlight quality products and locations that are well designed and use minimal colours to express the elegance and simplicity that only black and white can.
Is there anything coming up for you that our audience can look forward to?
As the blog is in its infancy, there is lots to look forward to. I am excited to highlight some of my favourite Australian companies and share their products with you.
In the lead up to Christmas there will be a focus making your day extra special. Expect gift guides, wrapping techniques, table settings and some gifts from me to you.
Who is your inspiration?
We are very lucky to live in the era of communication. Through social media you can connect with inspiring people from all over the world exchanging ideas. In my personal life, I am inspired by my family and friends whose unwavering support continues to encourage the best out of me and my work.
Favourite interior trend?
For me interior design is about the connection between you and your space. While trends come and go, I base my style on what I like and emotionally resonates with me. I am locked in a constant battle between trying to live in a crisp minimal home and love of a good bargain.
Worst interior trend ever?
There is too many to mention…
If a member of our audience is looking to redecorate their home - what are two pieces of decor they should invest in?
When designing your home you should consider how you plan to live in the years to come. The planning and organisational layout of your house will inform the way you interact within each space.
When it comes to interior decorating, investing in quality pieces that are well designed and will outlive the current ‘it’ interior trend or colour palette. For instance, in the living room choose a couch that suits your needs for the next five to ten years. Consider the size requirements and choose fabrics that are forgiving. White fabrics may be in fashion, but they do not mix well with red wine or muddy footprints. Opting for neutral larger pieces means that you can make a statement with smaller homewares that you can change up every year or so as new trends emerge without breaking the bank – and because who doesn’t love new cushions!
What is a colour scheme/style theme that can’t go wrong?
It will come as no surprise that I believe the scheme you can’t go wrong with is black and white. Monochrome decorating transcends specific trends or design styles, instead it utilises contrast to emphasise tone, text and form. As your tastes change, it’s a colour palette that will evolve with you.
There is still lots to come from It’s a Monochrome Lifestyle but what we can expect to see is more black and white! Ainsley’s creative eye allows these two shades to produce a spacious and quirky design for any room in the house. With her emphasis on ‘timeless pieces’ you can guarantee that your furniture trend is in for the long run. With all these home decor style tips it comes as no surprise Ainsley Ryan’s blog is one of Australia’s up and coming lifestyle influencer blogs for 2016.
