Ah bed. We love you, a lot. Is it the super luxe mattress that sets our hearts aflutter? Or the feeling of being totally relaxed and happy? If we had the choice we’d never leave our cosy as anything sheets. Next time you need an excuse to stay in bed all day here’s one ready-made for whoever dares question you.
Your brain needs a break
There’s something about the physical act of getting out of bed and getting yourself dressed that takes a lot more effort some days over others. If you’re dreading the thought of leaving your cosy covers maybe that means you shouldn’t? Mental health days are becoming more popular and accepted so why not test one out.
Sage Greenwood, General Manager at WINK Models describes our ideal working situation.
“At WINK Models we believe firmly in Doona Days. We give each staff member 1 doona day a year, which is a paid day to stay at home, under the bed sheets and work on your mental health. As leaders, we understand the need to sometimes stop and refresh to avoid a burn out and have some down time. It goes a long way to creating a fresh mind and restarting the energy levels.”

You need to meet a deadline
From creative pursuits to reports that were due yesterday, sometimes it pays to minimise the distractions. Working from your bed can be productive since it means less interruptions and distractions in your day.
Dina Cooper is no stranger to a well-thought out day in bed. When not dealing with clients she uses a day in bed to get her creativity flowing and write her book. Her tips for a great day in bed;
“1) Know your energy rhythms and play to them
2) Give yourself permission for down time
3) Sometimes you're more productive when you are doing less, with more focus”

It can lower your risk of diabetes
Early research in the Journal of Diabetes Care has indicated that your sleep in on the weekends is powerful enough to counteract your risk of diabetes from sleep deprivation during the week.
Insulin sensitivity and diabetes risk returned to normal after only 2 nights of extra shut eye. The researchers are cautiously optimistic about these results but also warn it’s not a free pass to mess up your sleep schedule. More studies are needed to solidify the science but we think it counts as a reason to stay in bed this weekend.
You’re feeling sick
We’re not talking major flu and you physically can’t leave bed. Anything from a slight cough to minor allergies can be a reason you need to stay in bed. Skip out on the office because you’re more likely to infect others and lounge around in your PJs for a day. If you catch it at the start your illness may only last one day.
You’re going through a breakup
You know that scene in Legally Blonde where Elle is just holed up in bed eating chocolate and yelling at the TV? That was the place she realised she should go to law school and inadvertently launched her entire life. If she’d never wallowed in bed we’d never have known the importance of removing showers and perms from your alibi. You might think you have it all together and don’t need a day off after a breakup but emotions have a way of creeping up on you. Spending a day in bed is probably just what you need right now.
You’re kind of hungover
Things have changed a lot since you were partying in uni. Back then you’d be out all night and at the gym the next morning. These days it takes a whole day to get back to your best. Even if you were to attempt to be productive your hangover would have you moving so slow it’s barely worth it. We say you may as well give in to the pain, stay in bed and hydrate as much as possible.
The weather is awful
Thanks to climate change it could be too hot, too cold or pouring with rain all in one day. It’s no longer just Melbourne who feel the 4 seasons at once. When the weather leans toward unpredictable you have our permission to avoid exiting the house at all costs.
You need to catch up on Netflix
There’s nothing worse than feeling out of the loop. And with the speed of pop culture these days it’s not hard to fall off the trend wagon. Missed out on Stranger Things, Orange Is The New Black, Mindhunter, Narcos, The Sinner, Glow, Riverdale, Mad Men, Rick & Morty or any of the Marvel superhero series? Pick one. Start bingeing. It’s worth it, trust us.
Let logic reign and crown yourself queen (or king) of the bed-day! Treat your royally comfortable self to a beautiful bed head and let everyone else be jealous.
