With mere weeks left until the Spring Racing Carnival arrives in Melbourne there’s no time for horsing around! We’ve pulled together the trends of the season so you’ll be the lady everyone’s talking about for all the right reasons. You can even shop elegant tops, fun dresses and perfect accessories in your after work hours with MyWardrobe.
Derby Day
As the first event on the calendar Derby Day sets the tone for things to come. The carnival hasn’t hit peak party yet and the dress code is still all class and elegance. The black and white theme can quickly become boring without fabric and textures to elevate your look. Opt for geometric lace, feather detailing or edgy accessories such as pearls and metallic black studs. Sleeves are also in this year and can be a safe bet to combat the unpredictable Melbourne weather.
We recommend classic styling from head to toe. While fascinators are a bit of fun, a wide brimmed hat will have you looking like an old Hollywood star.
Melbourne Cup
All eyes will be on Melbourne as Cup Day rolls around and it’s not just about the horses. The highest profile day of the carnival calls for high style. Your look should be modern but still elegant. Colour is your friend so mix and match bold and bright tones from fuchsia to burnt orange and bright mustard yellow. Same as Derby Day, cover your pins and keep the hemline on the knee or below.
A brightly coloured jumpsuit is a fashion-forward, comfortable choice that’ll get you compliments all day long. Make sure to double check the dress standards if you’ll be attending the Member’s sections.
Crown Oaks Day
Florals are forever and you can’t go wrong on ladies’ day with a quintessentially Spring floral number. Wrap dresses have been experiencing a revival this year so get on that bandwagon with a flattering and classic maxi length.
Never been a flower girl? Then ruffles and blush tones are where you’ll want to look. Create drama with an off the shoulder ruffle detail or flippy skirt.
Soft and dreamy is your outfit inspiration. Keep it simple yet modern with a metallic flower crown to complete the look.
Emirates Stakes Day
If there were a Spring Racing day that was all about celebration it has to be Stakes. Reaching the end of the carnival puts everyone in a party mood. Dress codes relax and families join in the fun as we bring the event to a close. So throw out the rulebook and choose a youthful look.
Cheeky and playful styles are the order of the day from metallic shift dresses to tailored shorts and jumpsuits. This year we expect to see plenty of Brigitte Bardot inspired looks with the off-the-shoulder neckline a huge trend for Spring.
For The Guys
Guys have it easy right? All they have to do is wear a suit. Sure they could get away with a plain old black and white number but given the chance men should step up their style game. Change it up with a patterned suit (checks or stripes) or trying out new colours like a vibrant navy blue or mix and match beige pants and a dark jacket. If you’d rather stick to the basics for your suit then embrace the opportunity for patterns, florals and colours in your shirt and tie.
Accessorising is foreign territory to most men so give them a hand by offering tips on complimentary pocket squares, tie pins, cuff links and a straw Fedora to keep the sun at bay.
If we had one major don’t it’s using race days to revive your velvet jacket. This dark and heavy fabric will be too hot to wear all day and is much better suited to an evening affair.
With just enough time left for you to pull together the perfect outfit you can shop with confidence knowing what to expect at this years Spring Races.
