2016 flew by at a crazy speed, and many of you may be left feeling stunned that we are already well into the new year. Perhaps you are left feeling as though you didn’t accomplish all that you intended to last year. But a fresh year presents the perfect chance for a fresh start, and the opportunity to set your sights on your priorities for this year.
But how can you be sure to make your 2017 successful, and stay focused on achieving your resolutions all year round? There are many small steps you can take to avoid letting the year get the best of you and listed below are 5 tips to get you started.
1. Plan Small For Bigger Results
Ridiculously high expectations may just set you up for failure and disappointment, so make sure you keep your resolutions within reason for this year. For example, rather than trying to drastically improve every area of your life, maybe focus on one aspect that you intend to work on.
For some this might mean taking on a healthier lifestyle, making more time to spend with family or working towards a promotion at work. It could even be as simple as taking up a new hobby, travelling somewhere you have always wanted to go, or reading a certain number of books. The sky’s the limit, as your personal resolutions can be whatever you feel will improve your wellbeing.
2. Prepare A Timeframe For Yourself
Deciding on your resolutions is only half the battle, as you must now develop a systematic approach to work towards them. If your goal is to run a 10k by the end of the year, you should be tracking your progress, and should have mini-goals written down for each week or month, so you know if you are staying on task.
Similarly if you decided that taking up cooking at home is a priority for you this year, decide when you will purchase the kitchenware you require, and what you will start off learning to make. By having a clear plan, working towards achieving your goals becomes far less daunting!
3. Prioritize Personal Goals
Although it may be tempting to make all your new year’s resolutions work-related, it sometimes pays to prioritize personal goals above professional ones. Focusing on your health, relationships and overall well-being are likely to bring about positive effects in your professional life as well, which kills two birds with one stone.
Think about all the hobbies you have been putting off due to being “too busy”, and start ticking them off. This could be anything from learning a new language, putting more effort into your home decor, or taking a dance class. There are no limits!
4. Be Public About Your Aspirations
If you are the only person who knows what your resolutions are, the only person you let down if you don’t achieve them is yourself. Telling your friends and family about your plans holds you accountable to them, as they are likely to check in on how you are doing. So telling people that you communicate with on a regular basis can most definitely assist you with sticking to your agenda!
To make it more fun, why not ask others if they need help sticking to their resolutions and make regular dates to check up on each other. This gives you something to work towards in the short term, and someone to congratulate you when you have done well!
5. Don’t Get Knocked By Setbacks
In 365 days, it is virtually impossible to not slip up on what you are meant to be doing at least once. Things in our lives pop up when least expected, and we can’t be expected to prepare for each and every surprising event.
Approach things with an open mind, and try not get too worried if things go slightly differently than you planned. As long as you are making overall progress, a couple of days here or there won’t make a difference. So stay strong, and get back on track with your plan as soon as you can, without causing yourself too much anxiety over it.
The year is young, so don’t waste it on excuses! Decide what your resolutions are and get started today. Have a productive and fun 2017!
