Hot Chocolate in Wonderland : When You Are Going Crazy, You're Always the Last One to Know.

Hot Chocolate in Wonderland : When You Are Going Crazy, You're Always the Last One to Know.

From pop star to fully certified 'fruitcake', Louise May's epic journey is littered with a kamikaze-style marriage, celebrity substance abuse, self-harm with a blunt instrument, and two of the worst imaginary friends any aspiring diva could wish for.

Young, successful and as dippy as hell, Louise is performing with her pop band 'The Bingles' in Hong Kong when her two-timing ex-boyfriend turns up to publicly and extravagantly propose marriage. How could anyone addicted to a life of superficiality and glitter possibly refuse? Within seconds, Louise has blown off her career and eloped to Tahiti. Within a year the marriage is in shreds after she discovers a mistress and a love child.

Louise auditions for and gets a great gig--a new TV concept called 'Glitter Box'. Loved by the sponsors and earning bags of money, Louise finds herself lonely and unhappy. Back on the booze and training to be the perfect loose cannon, her performances on and off air become increasingly erratic.

Louise falls head-over-heels with Adam, the sound guy, and decides to ask him to marry her live on air and everyone lives happily ever after. Louise fulfils her dream of becoming a mother and wife.

All seems fine until the night of her 40th birthday.

She cracks.

With a bellyful of vodka, the indiscriminate use of a blunt knife, and a fully intentional overdose, Louise is rushed to hospital.

And that's where the fairy tale ends, and a terrifying journey begins. Checking into the 'spa' is more like being cross-examined at a murder trial. Then, seeing all her fellow inmates attaching streamers and bows onto sparkly top hats, makes her wonder exactly what's going on. And then it hits--shit, it's the Melbourne Cup. The day that stops the nation and here she is in crazy land with a bunch of nutty new friends. Wanting to run but, knowing she must stay for the sake of her family, she sucks it up. That's until she discovers her doctor's agenda--a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and a relaxing spark or two of ECT. Deposited in a public psych ward, Saskia and Foxy, her celebrity x band mates and imaginary friends, have a ball. After a while, Louise is faced with an awful reality. She may just be bipolar.

On top of that, her doctor wants her to become a pharmaceutical guinea pig and make silly paintings. Worse, she becomes disgustingly addicted to... supercharged hot chocolate. It's the funniest nightmare she's ever had.

Armed with her faith that love truly conquers all darkness and finally accepting her doctor's diagnosis, Louise finds the strength to recover fully. She vows never to attempt to leave Adam and her children alone in this world, or drink hot chocolate again. Although, on second thoughts, the hot chocolate may be negotiable.
