Ozone (O3) is a natural, colourless gas made up of three oxygen atoms. The third oxygen atom in ozone is unstable and combines easily with organic and inorganic molecules to destroy or change them through oxidation. After oxidation, the resulting by-product is oxygen (O2). This process effectively deodorises, disinfects and destroys many of the pathogens that contaminate tap water.
Ozone will break down or oxidise almost anything that it contacts, making it an extremely powerful disinfectant and oxidiser. In fact, it is a much stronger oxidiser than chlorine and is the second strongest commercially available disinfectant in the water treatment industry, after the hydroxyl free radical.
