Surface Preparation
Mask off the sink, appliances, and all adjacent areas with smooth painter's tape. Spread the drop cloth on the floor of all base cabinets. Apply smooth painter's tape on the wall behind the backsplash.
The surface of the benchtop must be completely cleaned and de-glossed in accordance to the instructions to ensure proper performance of the Benchtop Transformations. Complete de-glossing is CRITICAL for proper coating system performance. For proper adhesion, prime bare timber with Rust-Oleum(R) Zinsser BIN Primer.
APPLICATION OF BASE COAT Apply when air (ambient) and surface temperature is 16- 27oC and the relative humidity is below 70%. Thoroughly stir the Base Coat using a stir stick. Pour a portion of the Base Coat into a clean paint tray. Starting with the back splash, use a 50mm synthetic brush to apply an even coat of Base Coat. Be sure that the coverage includes 2-5cm of the flat benchtop surface that connects to the backsplash. This will prevent the roller from accidentally bumping into the backsplash while rolling. Working from back-to-front, use the enclosed 150mm x 10mm nap roller to apply an even coat of Base Coat over the entire benchtop. Then use the brush again to coat any tight spaces (i.e. around the sink or in the corners). For each section, after the Base Coat has been applied to the entire surface, re-roll in one, uniform direction towards the front (your body). After the Base Coat has been applied, quickly inspect the entire benchtop for sags, mistakes or areas of thin coverage. Apply more Base Coat where necessary. After the first coat has dried for at least 60 minutes or until the inside edges are dry, apply a second coat as detailed above. Once the second coat is dry to touch (approximately 30 minutes) and before it completely dries, be sure to remove any tape by first scoring around the edges. Allow the coating to dry overnight. Apply the Protective Topcoat within 24 hours of applying the Base Coat. APPLICATION OF THE TOPCOAT Wipe down the benchtop with a damp lint-free cloth to remove any dust that may have settled overnight and allow to dry Wearing gloves and safety glasses pour the entire contents of Part A Activator into the Part B Base and thoroughly mix with a stir stick for at least 2 minutes. It is important to stir thoroughly for proper activation. Then pour a portion of the blended Protective Topcoat mixture into a clean paint tray and cover the remaining paint. IMPORTANT: Once mixed and activated, the working time is 90 minutes. Do not use leftover Protective Topcoat after 90 minutes even if it appears liquid. Use a clean 50mm synthetic paint brush to apply an even layer of Protective Topcoat to the backsplash and along the edges. Even out the decorative mica flakes as you brush so they are evenly dispersed. Be sure that the coverage includes 2-5cm of the flat benchtop surface that connects to the backsplash as when the Base Coat was applied. This will prevent the roller from accidently bumping into the backsplash when rolling. For even coverage and to avoid brush marks, the 150mm x 6mm velour roller that is provided must be used. Roll an even coat, from back to front, over the entire surface of the benchtop and over the front edge. Again blend the decorative mica flakes with the roller so they are evenly dispersed. For each section, once the protective Topcoat has been applied to the entire surface, re-roll in one uniform direction. Allow the Protective Topcoat to dry undisturbed, taking steps to make sure the benchtop is not touched or brushed up against. Keep windows closed, pets away, and ceiling fans off. The Protective Top Coat will be tack free in 4-6 hours. Coating will dry overnight. Allow the benchtop to dry to the touch, approximately 12 hours. Score the smooth painter's tape along the edges of the benchtop. Then carefully remove the tape. Allow the Protective Topcoat to dry 48 hours for light use. Wait 7 days for full cure and maximum stain resistance.
