What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is a global retail sales event that follows the Thanksgiving holiday in the US. During this weekend-long sale, businesses heavily discount and offer deals on their stock. The Black Friday Bonanza event is followed by Cyber Monday, creating one super-sale week.

Is the Black Friday sale event in Australia?

Yes, even though Black Friday originated in the US, the sale is held in Australia too. It’s one of the biggest shopping events of the year; in fact, this year, around 6.8 million Australians plan to shop this Black Friday season. It’s the perfect time to score a bargain or tick some items off your Christmas shopping list.

Why is it called the Black Friday sale?

The term ‘Black Friday’ originated in the US. It was first used in 1869 to describe a stock market crash brought on by a significant drop in the price of gold.

However, the ‘Black Friday’ shopping event got its name in Philadelphia, after Police used it in the 1960s to describe the increased chaos of shoppers and motorists on the road on the Friday after Thanksgiving, - when massive crowds of people would swarm the malls while enjoying a 4-day weekend. Back then retail store records were kept by hand and red ink meant a loss whereas black indicated a profit, hence the name ‘Black Friday’.

By the 1980s, Black Friday had become a popular sales event where people could get a fantastic deal, and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger!
