The Voltaic pile, named after its inventor Alessandro Volta, was the first battery to ensure a constant electrical current to a circuit. The invention of the Voltaic pile triggered a flurry of new discoveries in battery chemistry. The pile is able to generate electricity by layering two different metals (copper and zinc) with a brine-soaked cloth. This cloth acts as an electrolyte and allows the flow of electrons required for an electrical current.
