BMW started developing the M1 for use in racing.
It was a two-seat supercar with an engine in the centre of the car, but production numbers did not increase and it took time to qualify for the category in which the M1 was intended to compete, and as the category was also in decline, it had nowhere to go.
The M1 Procar Cup, held as a prelude to the F1 race, was started to make the most of the M1s that had been built for such racing, and became very popular as famous drivers showed their serious battles in equal-condition cars.
Hot Wheels used the race car as a motif, featuring over wings to accommodate the thick tyres, a huge rear wing and front spoiler.
