Art Deco Interiors For Art Lovers

Art Deco interior design is all about exuberance and craftsmanship. Geometric patterns, huge light fixtures, large-scale curvaceous furniture, bold colours and lots of odd-shaped mirrors make up the art deco interior style.

What is Art Deco Interior Design?

Introduced in the 1920s, this style combined modern technological progress with rich materials, glamour and luxury. Inspired by multiple art movements, the interior style of different monarchies and an exaggerated version of Asian and Maya art. It’s all about using rare expensive materials in your furniture and decor. However, around the 1930s the style developed a little further to accommodate new materials that were popular at the time. Chrome plating, stainless steel and plastics along with polished and smooth surfaces became a signature of the Art Deco interior design. Art Deco interior design takes inspiration from the 20th-century version and adapts it to the 21st Century decoration style and architecture.

Lighting Fixtures

One of the defining factors of art deco interiors is the light fixtures. Chandeliers are a common element of this interior design but you can’t just go for any normal chandelier. You need to get chandeliers that are large and unusual.

Art deco is all about displaying opulence and an appreciation for art. So, when selecting the lighting fixtures for the house, go for chandelierspendant lights or wall lights that stand out.

Victorian-style chandeliers, caged pendant lights, and dome lamp shades can all be considered part of this style. The point is that the light fixture should not just blend into the background but be a big part of the furniture and decoration in the room.

Large-scale Furniture

Art deco furnishing is all about taking direct inspiration from the 1920s and 30s. Using large-scale furniture adorned with jewel tones is a signature of this style. Don’t overcrowd the room. The key to the art deco interior is to leave empty spaces that allow the loud colours, materials and patterns on the furniture and decoration to shine. When in doubt, go for velvet sofas or chairs for the living and dining area. The chic look of velvet catches the eye and is a perfect representation of art deco interiors.

As mentioned before, craftsmanship is highly appreciated in this particular interior design. Rattan furniture and intricately crafted wicker furniture are ideal for this. Go for rattan headboards for your bedroom. Additionally, shapes are important too. Curvaceous sofas or sofa chairs are an excellent choice.

Note: Tub chairs are an excellent example of curvy chairs.

BAR FURNITURE

Metal and antique pieces are excellent choices when it comes to art deco furniture. Bar carts with a metallic frame are a good investment for your home bar or kitchen. They also add a charming aura to the kitchen and dining room. Additionally, you need to keep up the luxurious look with bar stools. Antique bar stools will look perfect for art deco interiors. The antique look is quite unique and that is what makes it ideal for this look.

TAKE YOUR TABLES TO THE NEXT LEVEL

A table with a simple design is definitely not what you should be looking for with art deco interiors. If you’re going for a wooden table, opt for a carefully designed solid wood table or a table made of reclaimed wood. Tables with metal frames and marble tops are a great way to add a bit of flair to the room. A piece of furniture like that would immediately draw your attention and that is exactly what you want. Pair it with some soft velvet chairs to complement the hard look of the marble-top table.

ELABORATE BED HEADS

The bedroom doesn’t need to be any less fancy when it comes to decoration than the living room. Elaborate bed heads are a great way to brighten up the room even more. We would recommend going for an upholstered headboard that is a little bigger than the size of the bed base or frame. It adds colour to the room and the large size makes it look like an individual piece of art.

Patterns and Colours

Rich is one of the few words that should come to mind when we are referring to art deco interiors. Whether it is patterns or colours, everything has to be bold. As far as patterns are concerned, it is well established that art deco interiors are all about geometric patterns and symmetry. From wallpapers to rugs, if you’re incorporating patterns in a room, make sure you stick to geometric designs. However, it is common to use animal prints in rugs, bed linens, sofas and sometimes even wallpapers. With animal prints, however, we would recommend toning down the patterns and colour for the furnishing and decor of the room.

Art Deco colours are bold and luxurious. Gold is an absolute favourite. You can try to incorporate gold in different ways around the room. Additionally, you can always opt for deep colours such as navy blue, charcoal grey and deep greens. However, soft creams and light shades of pink sit well with this style.

Mirrors Are Important

Art Deco interiors cannot be complete without certain decoration elements. Mirrors play a huge part in this style of interior. Along with adding some more light to the room, mirrors add an extra artistic element. Mirrors with handcrafted rattan frames or hexagonal-shaped mirrors with metallic frames would suit the bill. Moreover, you don’t just have to use mirrors in your bedroom or dressing area. As part of the Art Deco style, you can incorporate artistic mirror pieces in your entryway, living and dining room.

In some cases, people choose to turn to cover an entire wall with a mirror. It is common for people to especially choose the bathroom or bedroom for a mirror wall. A mirror wall will reflect light into every corner of the room making it look larger than life. Moreover, there is something fun about seeing everything you do in a mirror.

It is All About Art

Appreciate the art around you whether it is the furniture, pieces of decor or wall art. Your appreciation for craftsmanship should openly show throughout the house. If you like the paintings of a certain artist, make it a point to display their work in your house. On the other hand, if you have an obsession with woodwork, then let this obsession guide you in getting your hands on furniture that is etched with the most beautiful carvings. Don’t shy away from colours, use them to your advantage. Art Deco interiors allow you to never be bored wherever you look.
