In 1975, John Hurt starred as Quentin Crisp in The Naked Civil Servant. In 2009 Hurt revisits the role, depicting the latter years of Crisps life, those spent living in New York. This incredible film depicts the initial fanfare that greeted Crisp on arrival in New York and his subsequent fall from public grace after controversially declaring AI DS to be a fad, nothing more. Hurt is once again brilliant in his depiction of the aging Crisp, taking us on a journey into the soul of a man dealing not only the ravishes of age, but also the pain of being rejected and scorned by a community that once worshipped him. With standout performances from the likes of Cynthia Nixon (Sex in The City), An Englishman in New York is an outstanding achievement by all involved and a fitting tribute to one of the most illuminating voices of the twentieth century. An Englishman In New York received its world premiere at the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival; where Hurt was awarded a 'Special Teddy' for his outstanding performance as the inimitable Crisp.
