DC motor with wheel and rubber tyres suitable for Arduino® vehicle based robotics projects.
This is a 3 – 6 V DC motor with a 48.75:1 reduction ratio gearbox. The output shaft is at a right angle to the motor shaft. These motors are designed are designed for the radio-controlled models and small robotic projects and require a motor driver module or shield if they are to be controlled from a microcontroller board such as the Arduino.
When supplied the 5V DC, these assemblies move quite fast (740 mm/s). To reduce this speed, the tyre can be removed and replaced with a section from a bicycle inner tube. This reduces the outside diameter from 70mm to 52mm, resulting in a 74% decrease in speed and an increase in torque of 35%.
The gear train consists of an 8 tooth pinion gear on the motor (red), then a 26:9 (green), 28:14 (blue), 36:16 (purple), and a 30 tooth (yellow) gear at the output shaft. This results in a ratio of 48.75:1, a reduction of 1:0.025, or inversely, 1 turn of the output shaft requires 48.75 turns of the motor. This also increase the torque of the motor by the same factor of 48.75.
Performance:
Even identical motors from the same assembly line often have small differences in performance, especially with no load speeds. Pule width modulation (PWM) can be used to synchronize the motors if there are large discrepancy when the loading is applied.
