Is Tummy time necessary?

Babies need to spend some time lying down each day. It helps with their physical development by building strength in their head, necks, arms, and shoulders and helps them develop coordination.

Baby tummy time is when your baby lies on their back and is then placed on their stomach for a short period.

Start with a few minutes a few times per day. As your baby grows, it’ll be able to stay on its stomach for a longer period.

Remember, you should supervise the baby at all times during tummy time.

And only do tummy time when your baby is awake. Babies should always sleep on their backs to decrease the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

What are the benefits of tummy time?

Tummy time is important for a baby’s development. Some of its benefits include:

  • It helps develop strong neck and shoulder muscles
  • Promotes gross motor skills
  • It can help prevent the flat head syndrome
  • It helps the baby build up the strength needed for rolling over, sitting up, crawling, and eventually walking

How to do Tummy Time

Newborns may tolerate tummy time for only 1 to 2 minutes at first. As your baby grows, you can increase tummy time.

By the time your baby is 5 to 6 months old, they’ll likely be rolling from front to back. Then they’ll roll back to the front and may even be able to push up to a sitting position on their own.

You can still give them opportunities for tummy time after they’ve reached these developmental stages. Tummy time can help them continue to develop muscles needed for:

  • Sitting for long periods
  • Crawling
  • Walking
How to make time for tummy time?

It’s important to make time for tummy time each day. You can try to fit it in after you bathe your little one or after a diaper change.

You may want to avoid tummy time immediately after eating, though.

For some babies, lying on their tummy when it’s full may disrupt digestion, and this could lead to gas or spit-up. Other babies, however, seem to pass gas more easily on their tummies.

When you get home from the hospital, find quiet moments throughout your day for some tummy time. You can also lie or sit on the floor next to them and make faces or read them a board book.
