Rhizarthrosis is the arthritis of the base of the thumb, i.e. pain in the thumb that caused by the wear of the cartilage at the joint between the trapezium bone and the base of the first metacarpal (see image below as circled)
Rhizarthrosis is the most common form of hand arthritis.

It manifests itself by pain, usually gradual, in the base of the thumb, which occurs spontaneously. The pain makes it difficult for patient to seize and hold objects with the thumb.
