In Maui, players compete to build the most beautiful beach, placing towels on their boards to create harmonious patterns while avoiding the risks of getting too close to the ocean or seeking shade under trees and umbrellas. The goal is to place beachgoers in ideal spots that will score the most points, but careful planning is needed to avoid penalties.

Each player starts with their own beach board, which can hold up to 13 towels. The board has seven rows, and players begin by randomly placing eight umbrellas in designated spots. During each turn, players choose to either take all sand dollars from one row of the market or select a towel from the market, which costs 0-2 sand dollars. When placing a towel, players aim to match its patterns with the towel at the rightmost position on their board, advancing the corresponding pattern's score marker. Placing towels near the ocean or under the shade earns more points, but putting towels outside the designated area will result in penalties.

Umbrellas grant special bonuses when covered, such as advancing a pattern or receiving pearls. Additionally, instead of umbrellas, players can choose a variant with sand crabs, where covering a crab with a towel will cost them both a pattern and points.
