Dichloromethane (DCM or methylene chloride) is an organochloride compound with the formula CH2Cl2. This colorless, volatile liquid with a chloroform-like, sweet odour is widely used as a solvent. Although it is not miscible with water, it is polar, and miscible with many organic solvents.

Noncombustible but if exposed to high temperatures may emit toxic chloride fumes. Vapors are narcotic in high concentrations.

Methylene chloride is primarily used as a solvent in

• aerosol formulations
• for the removal of caffeine from coffee and tea
• as a solvent in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals
• as a degreasing agent, in electronics manufacturing
• film coatings
• as an ethane foam blowing agent
