Pierre Cardin is an Italian-born French fashion designer who gained fame for his futuristic fashions in the 1950s and 1960s. Originally studying architecture, Cardin came to Paris in 1945 and worked for Jeanne Paquin and Elsa Schiaparelli before joining the new house of Christian Dior. He remained there until 1950, when he left to begin his own fashion house. Some of Cardin's earliest designs include costumes for films by Jean Cocteau, as well as for theatrical productions. His first women's wear collection was shown in 1953, and the popularity of his "bubble dress" design enabled him to open his first women's boutique in 1954. A men's boutique was opened in 1957, and Cardin began designing men's shirts and ties, with an eye towards a future collection. Ready-to-wear was gaining popularity by this time, and Cardin's first women's ready-to-wear collection, for department store Printemps, was created in 1959. The first Cardin men's collection, shown in 1960, was quickly followed by a men's ready-to-wear line in 1961. During this time, Cardin traveled extensively through Japan, and was one of the first European designers to offer high fashion to the emerging Japanese market. Cardin served as an honorary professor at Japan's Bunka Fukosa design college, and a Pierre Cardin Prize for design has been awarded there since 1962. China and other Asian countries would also become important markets in the future endeavors of Pierre Cardin. Cardin has won multiple awards for his designs, including Golden Thimble awards and the Golden Spinning Wheel. In 1971, he opened "Espace Cardin," a design showroom that is also a theater, restaurant and cinema. The designer's creations expanded beyond fashion to include furniture, interior design, automobile interior design and jewelry. A series of Pierre Cardin showrooms and boutiques were opened throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1981, Cardin purchased the famous Maxim's restaurant in Paris. He maintained the remarkable Art Nouveau style of the restaurant, adding a cabaret on the second floor and eventually turning the remaining floors of the building into a museum devoted to the Art Nouveau style. The Maxim's brand has expanded under Cardin's ownership to include restaurants around the globe, a line of gourmet foods, perfumes, and a fleet of boats. Pierre Cardin began offering perfumes under his own brand with men's scent Pierre Cardin Pour Monsieur in 1972.
