This is an unusual plant which is a relative of the hibiscus. The fruits are produced on tall plants (up to 2.5m) and they are commonly used for making jams but can also be used in cordials or teas. The flowers are hibiscus like and once they die down they leave a red cone shaped fruit (see picture) which is the part used.
Sow in Spring and Summer - Only suitable for warm climates with no frosts or in cool areas with a long warm season (atleast 6 months). Perennial in tropical climates, Annual in cool regions Sow 5mm, seedlings emerge 10-14 days, space 50cm apart, best germination if soil is atleast 18 degrees. Harvest when fruits are young for best tenderness.
