The largest species of rhinoceros in the world, the white rhinoceros, or rhino for short, is a large horned mammal endemic to the southern half of Africa. White rhinos are actually a dark gray, and many believe the name "white" actually comes from a mistaken translation.
History:
The white rhino is split into two subspecies: the southern and the northern white rhino. Due to the large differences in where they live and the relative the habitat loss in each region, the southern white rhino is considered near threatened= with over 20,000 individuals living in the wild. However, the northern white rhino is critically endangered, with only 3 members left in captivity. All 3 are kept in the same preserve with hopes of breeding and increasing their population in the near future.
