As many of them are invisible to the naked eye, we often breathe in smoke, soil, dust, chemicals, allergen particles and biological contaminants without knowing it. Many of these minuscule airborne hazards pose a risk to our human health. A good disposable protective face mask can help filter out many of these potentially harmful contaminants and reduce risk of transmitting airbourne infectious diseases.
A proper protective face mask is typically composed of 3 layers. The outermost layer must be hydrophobic (ie. water-repellent). It serves to prevent airbourne droplets from penetrating through the face mask. The middle filtration layer must be made of meltblown non-woven fabric. It serves to trap micrometre-sized particles and biological contaminants, stopping them reaching the mouth and nose. The innermost layer must be a layer that is absorbent and soft to the skin. This layer serves to absorb moisture such as saliva, mucus and sneeze droplets breathed out by the user.
A face mask, although looks simple, the technology behind it, especially the production of the meltblown fabric, is complex and expensive. Meltblown is made with fibres where one filament has a diameter less than one micron. A "micron" is an abbreviation term for "micrometer", or a millionth of a meter (1/1,000,000 meters). So we are in the nano area. For a size comparison, a human red blood cell is about 5 microns across. A human hair is about 75 microns across (depending on the person). That is one of the reasons that face mask can easily be in short supply at time of crisis.
Not all 3-layer masks are the same. While masks may look similar, the quality can vary wildly. Unfortunately, some low quality or "fake" 3-layer mask do not even have genuine meltblown middle layer there. Masks made of poor quality material give users a false sense of security.
When choosing face mask, it is important to choose the ones that comply with international standards. The claims must be verifiable at the certification authority websites. A simple DIY test like water-repellent test and meltblown flammability test could also give you an additional sense of confidence in quality of the facemask.
Wearing of facemask can help prevent the spread of disease, especially against infectious airbourne transmissions from invisible carriers. Of course, good hand-hygiene and social distancing are still very crucial.
