Italian born composer Tommaso Giordani (1730-1806) built his career in London, where he wrote a great deal of music including operas and chamber pieces. These six sonatas are his Opus 4. They are scored for violin and keyboard, and are each 2-movement works in the Galante style, similar to that of Johann Christian Bach. \nTommaso Giordani (1730-1806) was born in Naples, Italy, but his extensive
\n
\ntravels brought him to London, where he built his career until his death.
\n
\nHe wrote an immense amount of music: best known as an opera composer
\n
\nhe also wrote chamber music for various instruments.
\n
\nGiordani's sonatas Opus 4 are for violin and keyboard, either harpsichord,
\n
\nfortepiano or organ. They are delightful 2-movement works in the Galante
\n
\nStyle, like his fellow émigré Johann Christian Bach. The writing for the
\n
\ninstruments, especially the keyboard, is of an advanced virtuosity, rich in
\n
\nscales, arpeggios, octave runs and fast passage work.
\n
\nExcellent performances by the Lithuanian violinist Lina Uinskyte and
\n
\nkeyboard player Marco Ruggeri, who already made a beautiful recording
\n
\nfor Brilliant Classics of sonatas by J.C. Bach (BC 94965).
