How Should Table Runners Fit

It is best to choose a table runner that is longer than the table, so it hangs off to the sides. The overhang typically ranges from 6 to 12 inches on both sides. If you don't like it hanging off the sides, then you can opt for a runner that is the exact same size as your table.

As far as the width of the table runner is concerned, it should ideally be around one-third of your table. Table runners are not meant to cover your entire table, they are a decorative and protective element that only usually covers the centre of the table. This width is ideal since it leaves enough space for place settings and other tableware.

Centre Placement & Multiple Pieces

Placing our table runner in the middle of the table is always advised, leaving an equal amount of overhang on both ends of the table. This symmetrical arrangement creates a balanced and cohesive look. If you want to make it a little creative, you can use multiple shorter table runners placed across the width of the table instead of a single long one. This works especially well for round tables or square tables and can be used to highlight individual place settings or add extra layers of texture. In this style, the runners should be evenly spaced and either drape over the table’s edges slightly or be flush with the edge.

Pairing with a Tablecloth

If you’re layering a table runner over a tablecloth, ensure the runner is long enough to create contrast but not so wide that it covers too much of the tablecloth’s surface. A narrower runner on top of a tablecloth creates a balanced, elegant layering effect. Choosing contrasting or complementary colours and textures between the runner and tablecloth to make the setup visually interesting.
