Let's face it, your sofa cops a fair bit of action, doesn't it? From plonking down after a long day to those inevitable spills during movie night, it's the heart of your living room. But life happens, and sometimes your beloved couch can start to look a little worse for wear. Before you start thinking about shelling out for a brand new one, have you considered the humble sofa or couch cover? These aren't your nan's old plastic slipcovers. We're talking about stylish, practical solutions that can breathe new life into your lounge and protect it from whatever life throws its way.
Why Do You Need a Sofa or Couch Cover
Sofa and couch covers are your first line of defence against all sorts of everyday mishaps- accidental red wine spills, the kids leaving their sticky fingerprints after an ice cream, or even just the general dust and grime that builds up over time. A good cover acts like a shield, stopping these things from ruining your actual sofa fabric.
They're an easy and affordable way to give your living room a whole new vibe. You can switch up the colour, try a different pattern, or even go for a completely different style to match the latest trends. It's like giving your lounge a mini makeover whenever you feel like it.
One of the best things about many sofa and couch covers is that they're super easy to clean. Most are machine washable, so you can just whip them off and throw them in with the laundry when needed.
By using a sofa or couch cover, you're adding an extra layer of protection that can really help extend the life of your furniture.
Getting The Right Material Makes All The Difference
-
Cotton: A classic choice known for its soft and breathable nature, making it comfortable, especially in warmer climates. It's also widely available in various colours and patterns. However, it might not be as resistant to stains as other options.
-
Polyester: A durable synthetic fabric that can withstand daily use and is often resistant to fading and wrinkles. It's also generally an affordable option.
-
Spandex Blends: These covers are highly stretchable, providing a snug and smooth fit over different sofa shapes. They are typically easy to care for and wrinkle-resistant.
-
Linen: Offers a relaxed and stylish look, often associated with coastal or casual decor. It's breathable and dries quickly but can be prone to wrinkling.
-
Microfibre: A popular choice for its soft feel, durability, and resistance to stains and spills, making it suitable for homes with children and pets.
-
Leather & Faux Leather: Provide a sophisticated and easy-to-clean surface. They are durable and can be simply wiped down after spills.
How to Measure Your Sofa for a Cover
Measuring Width, Length, and Height
First up, you'll need the main measurements of your sofa. You'll want to measure the width across the widest part of your sofa, from the outside of one armrest to the outside of the other. Then, measure the depth from the front of the seat to the very back of the sofa. For the height, measure from the top of the backrest all the way down to the floor.
Don't forget the seat width, which is just across the top of the seat cushions, and the back height, measured from the top of the seat to the top of the backrest. These measurements will help you find a cover that fits snugly in all the right places.
Measuring Armrests and Other Unique Features
Sofas come in all sorts of shapes, so we need to consider those armrests too. Measure the armrest width at its widest point and the armrest height from the seat to the top of the armrest.
If your sofa has separate cushions, it's a good idea to measure their length, width, and thickness as well. Some covers come with separate cushion covers, so these measurements will be important for a good fit. And if your sofa has any other unique features, like a chaise lounge section, make sure to measure the width, length, and height of that part too.
Measuring Sectionals and L-Shaped Sofas
Sectional sofas and those with an L-shape can seem a bit tricky, but the key is to measure each section separately. Treat each part of the sofa as its own piece of furniture. Measure the width, depth, and height of each section, including any armrests or unique features.
If your sectional has a corner piece, you'll want to measure the width and depth of each side of the corner. Some retailers offer covers specifically designed for sectional sofas, often in multiple pieces to cover each section individually.
Specific Styles to Look Out For
-
Stretch Fit Covers: Designed to tightly fit over your sofa. They are usually easy to put on and take off.
-
Fitted Covers: Tailored to specific sofa models or sizes. They may include zippers or ties for a secure fit.
-
Loose Fit Covers: Drape loosely over your sofa. They are generally easy to put on and remove.
-
Quilted Covers: Feature extra padding for enhanced comfort and protection, often chosen for their durability.
-
Skirted Covers: Add an element of traditional elegance with extra fabric that extends to the floor.
-
Sectional Covers: Specifically designed for modular or sectional sofas, often consisting of multiple pieces to cover each section.
Features to Keep in Mind for Added Convenience
-
Waterproof Covers: Ideal for preventing spills from soaking through to your sofa fabric.
-
Pet-Friendly Covers: Made from durable materials that resist scratches and are easy to clean pet hair from.
-
Machine Washable Covers: Allow for easy cleaning and maintenance.
-
Stain-Resistant Covers: Treated to repel stains and make them easier to remove.
-
Non-Slip Covers: Designed to stay in place without constant adjustment, often featuring elastic or non-skid materials.
-
Reversible Covers: Offer two different looks in one, providing versatility in your decor.

I bought the 2- and 3-seater stretch covers - 3 seater fitted good but 2 seater is too small and very disappointed that I do not have a matching set.

To be honest, for the price of this cover I wasn't expecting much. But it fits really well, feels great & washes nicely. The instructions were easy to follow too. I'm very happy with this purchase!

Bought it as a quick fix for the couches my kids sit on all day long and needed replacement. And it was definitely worth it and just throw in the washing machine and good to go again. Sometimes you have to readjust a few times but I'd still recommend.

I am absolutely delighted with my new couch covers, it’s like I have brand new couches for a fraction of the price, If you want to revamp a tired couch or protect a new one don’t hesitate to buy from Cosyplus. Plenty of colours and materials to choose from as well.
