The following guideline is a good starting point for when to use each filter while filming with your Inspire 1, Phantom 3, or Solo. The goal of this chart is to reduce the camera shutter speed to 1/60th to give aerial videos a smooth cinematic look, rather than a choppy high shutter speed look. A popular way of filming aerial video is to have your shutter speed at double the frame rate. So, if you are shooting 1080/60, then you want to try to achieve a 1/120th shutter speed. Or, if filming 4K/30 or 24, you will want to be near 1/60th shutter speed.

Polarizer Filter
The polarizer filter helps to reduce glare and improve color saturation. When filming from a quadcopter, a large amount of light is reflected back up towards the camera. The polarizer reduces the amount of glare bouncing off the ground. It can also be used to slow down the cameras shutter speed by reducing light by 1.6 stops.
ND Filters
The ND filters reduce light hitting the sensor, which slows down the camera's shutter speed. This creates a more natural-looking motion blur that smoothes out footage and helps reduce the appearance of "jello" effects from the camera's rolling shutter. They can also be used for reducing lens flare while shooting into the sun and for toning down highlights while filming outdoors. The following ND filters are included:
- ND8: This ND cuts light by 3 stops
- ND16: This ND cuts light by 4-stops
- ND32: This ND cuts light by 5-stops
ND/Polarizer Hybrid Filters
Because stacking filters can cause vignetting, the benefits of both an ND and a polarizer have been combined in one lens. The following ND/PLs are included:
- ND8/PL This filter cuts light by 3 stops
- ND16/PL This filter cuts light by 4 stops
Circular Polarizer Filter (CP)
The circular polarizing filter helps enhance aerial videos by reducing the amount of light reflecting off of the ground, leaving behind beautifully saturated colors and also improving contrast. This CP filter reduces the camera's shutter speed by 1.6-stops.
3-Stop Neutral Density Filter (ND8)
The 3-stop ND filters are typically what we use in medium light. This filter also helps reduce jello-effect by reducing the camera's shutter. This is our go-to filter for cloudy to partly cloudy days.
4-Stop Neutral Density Filter (ND16)
The 4-stop ND filter is what we use on brighter days, where we need to knock the shutter down by 4 stops to achieve a shutter of 1/60th. Generally, we use this filter for filming on mildly sunny to sunny days.
5-Stop Neutral Density Filter (ND32)
The 5-stop ND filter is what we use on extremely bright days, to take down the Inspire 1's shutter speed by 5 stops. This is a very dark filter so it should only be used where there is enough available light to reduce. We use this filter when shooting in the desert or over snow on very bright days.
3-Stop Polarizer (ND8/PL)
The ND8/PL is a versatile filter, which reduces the camera's shutter speed by 3 stops while also providing polarization. Perfect for conditions that are too bright for the CP filter, the ND8/PL allows you to reduce shutter speed by 3 stops while also capturing beautifully saturated colors.
4-Stop Polarizer (ND16/PL)
The ND16/PL provides 4 stops of shutter speed reduction while also providing polarization. This is our go-to filter for sunny days when we want to capture saturated colors and improve contrast.
