When it comes to brewing Kombucha it is best to use a cloth of higher quality compared to a lid to allow your Kombucha to breath and also to prevent insects from landing in your Kombucha Batch. Unfortunately, some materials do allow your Kombucha to breath but do not protect against unwanted intruders(insects). 

For example a simple muslin cloth which many people assume is good for protecting your Kombucha from unwanted intruders is actually woven with holes not preventing insects from entering your Kombucha vessel and contaminating your Kombucha Batch.
